The longer I’ve been in the design world, the more my friends and family seem to feel the need to apologize for their “unfinished” spaces. Naturally, I’m happy when I get invited to their spaces no matter what they look like 😉 . But I’m always surprised by how many of them say with a shrug, “I’ve never known what to put on my walls.”

Fortunately, I think there are many beautiful, affordable wall art options these days… and many of them can be found from the comfort of your own home! Enter printable artwork from Etsy.

What are public domain images?

Public domain images are images whose copyright date has expired. That means that they can be printed, edited, used, or sold freely by anyone. In fact, much of the designer vintage art you see these days are just beautiful old paintings that are now in the public domain.

Can you search for and fine your own public domain art? Yes! However, when I am working to decorate a particular space, I love to let others do the leg work for me. 😉

Etsy Art Prints

Instead, I often search Etsy for beautiful vintage printable art. There I’ve found many beautiful images (most of which are, admittedly, in the public domain). The images have already been formatted to the various sizes I might need, though, and for just a few dollars I have ready-to-print, high resolution artwork.

If you follow along on Instagram, then you know I’ve been working on our upstairs landing and hallway lately. It was a very simple update – some artwork and a plant mostly. But I love how it turned out.

I used simple black frames and chose this french vintage landscape painting for one. I couldn’t resist this lion sketch for the other, since Aslan of Narnia is one of my kids’ (and my) favorite characters of all time.

I also used beautiful vintage landscape prints in my daughters’ room at the ranch. I love the character and color they bring to any space.

  1. I love your style! What size prints are those and what size frames? (On your stairway) Also, where do you like to get your frame?

    1. Thank you so much! Apologies for the slow reply. The frames are 24×24, and the prints are 11×14. I got them from CB2 (affiliate link) and love the quality. I have slightly smaller ones (but a similar effect) from IKEA at our ranch house. Two different budget options! 🙂

    1. Hi Rosalie, I don’t think there is any hard fast rule, but matting really highlights the art and gives it room to breathe. I just shared all the details over on my Instagram stories about how I choose prints (and I saved it to my hallway highlights if you don’t see this before they expire).

  2. Thank you for sharing such wonderful information. It will be very helpful in interior designing ideas. I always like to learn about new things and I think this blog will be helpful for me.

  3. I have seen mixed results with Etsy, but sometimes they look nice if they survive FedEx/UPS.

A friend is using a brand called OhMyGrid for budget friendly wall art. Now I see their ads on Facebook – looks like a neat product. They custom print images as well. Could be worth checking out! -Michelle
