Budget Bathroom Updates: 5 Tips to Affordable Bathroom Makeovers

Budget bathroom updates can save both time and money when trying to affordably remodel your home. My sweet friend Ashley from Cherished Bliss is an expert at making basic spaces beautiful while on a budget. I am thrilled that she’s here today to share her cheap bathroom remodel ideas. Welcome Ashley!

Hey all! My name is Ashley and I blog over at Cherished Bliss. I’m thrilled to be here visiting my sweet friend Rachel while she gets some much-needed snuggle time with her new bundle of joy! Just a little about me… I love all things farmhouse but tend to lean towards a modern, industrial blend. Decorating our home is such a happy place for me, but my true passion (which I don’t always have time for) is building furniture. I have 3 beautiful kids, which attribute to the whole lack of time thing, and I love spending my time with them. They are my true happy place, and what makes our house a home.

Since I am knee-deep in a bathroom renovation I wanted to stop in today and share a few tips on updating a bathroom on a budget. I hope this helps spark some creative energy and gives you a few ideas of how you achieve the look you want without spending a fortune!

Tip 1: Paint the walls

Paint is always my first go to project when I need to update a space. When you’re working with a small room usually one gallon is enough paint, so for $30 you can totally transform the look of your space! All you need is a few painting supplies and a little elbow grease! And if you are feeling adventurous don’t be afraid to try painting your cabinets either!

Tip 2: Paint your floors

Painting floors is something I actually just tried for myself. We did it in our Modern Farmhouse Laundry Room over our existing vinyl floors. I won’t lie, it can be a little time-consuming, but the end result is totally worth it. I only needed 2 gallons of porch and floor paint to totally transform our floors! Tiling a small bathroom might not seem like a huge expense, but it often ends up being more than most anticipate. You run into problems like needing to rip out the vanity, replacing baseboard and removing subfloors. The list can really go on and before you know it, you are in a full-blown bathroom renovation. Painting the floors allows you to do the work without destroying your space, and allow a little more creativity into the room!

I’ve gotten quite a few questions about this process and I’ve answered a few FAQ’s on my tutorial post. But overall my opinion is: It’s time-consuming, but worth it! They seem to be holding up quite well to me sliding laundry baskets across the floor. I’ve also heard tons of great reviews on this process, I did mine a little different but I’m pretty positive it’s going to last!

Tip 3: Spruce up your mirror

Almost everyone at some point or another has a frameless mirror in their bathroom with those ugly little plastic clips. Adding a frame to your mirror is one of the easiest ways to give your bathroom a polished, finished look. There’s something about the raw edges of a mirror that give off an apartment vibe (which there’s totally nothing wrong with that), but my tutorial actually allows you to frame your mirror even if you’re in a rental! No more worrying about damaging the surface! It’s super easy and anyone can build this frame! You can even customize it by adding different trim and wood types, and at under $20 you can’t go wrong with adding this statement piece.

Tip 4: Update shower tile with affordable options

This is probably one of the more expensive ways to update your bathroom, but sometimes showers just need to be fixed not only for aesthetics, but functionality. In our previous bathroom our tile was starting to come away from the wall and desperately needed to be fixed so we could actually use our 2nd bathroom. I didn’t want to add standard 12×12 tiles and have it still look dated. I searched and found some more affordable options that didn’t sacrifice my style. We added white 4×4 tiles. I had always wanted subway tile of some sort, but they were more expensive. These 4×4 tiles were just barely over $1/sq.ft.

Tiling isn’t as scary as it sounds and places like Home Depot and Lowe’s even offer classes to help give you the DIY skills necessary to complete the project!

Tip 5: Add shelving

Take advantage of your empty wall space and let it provide you with some gorgeous storage options. There are so many tutorials for easy DIY shelving, and I’m there is one to fit your style :). Don’t be afraid of open shelving either. It’s easy, more accessible and can double as decor! Store your prettiest towels in sight, and use baskets to hide every day necessities!

I hope these tips gave you a few ideas if you’ve been wanting to fix up your bathroom! Most of these projects have very little financial investment and can still provide you with some pretty amazing transformations!
