I love watching the joy on my little ones’ faces when they find something just their size: the mini grocery carts at some stores, the little shovel we bought so they could help Daddy in the yard, and the kid-sized craft table.
It never fails… Sure, it’s fun to try grown up things: Mommy’s high heels, big beds, and giant brooms. But there’s something about things tailored just for them that seems to bring such pleasure.
We’ve had this little table (which I found at Goodwill) for a few years now, first in our playroom at our last house and then in the boys’ room (you can see it just peaking out on the right side of the image below). It was. very. blue.
Fun? Absolutely. Something I wanted to put in my dining room? Not so much. But our new house has no downstairs playroom, and not only do I want somewhere that my littlest one can sit and play, I’ve started homeschooling my kindergartener, and he needs a place to do his handwriting.
We sit at the bench in the dining room for lots of his work, but for handwriting it’s important that he be able to sit up straight with his feet on the floor, and this table is perfect for that.
I gave it a kid-sized but grown-up style makeover with some Behr Premium Plus Ultra in Ivory Keys (T16-17), one of the 2016 Color Trends colors – Behr’s suggestions for the top colors of 2016. I used a satin finish so it would be wipeable without being too glossy. I’ll spare you the real process pictures since I let my boys strip down to their underwear and help me paint. We are classy around here, folks. 😉
It’s a lovely, barely warm off white. I used the same paint as the background color for my diy fall sign, and I love how the two look together.
And with a pretty basket for school supplies, some of my painted mason jars for markers, and this little table, I feel like our dining room can be both elegant and hard working.
What do you think? Not a bad way to make my dining room multi-functional, is it?
