Cozy, Neutral Fall Decorating Ideas
Gather cozy, neutral fall decorating ideas with this simple fall decor home tour! From a black and white front porch to a casual elegant living room, you’ll find lots of cozy fall inspiration.
If you’ve come today for hay bales, scarecrows, and orange and yellow pumpkins, I’m afraid you’re going to be disappointed. I don’t even have any white pumpkins this year! Instead, I just attempted to bring a little extra warmth and coziness to my home for the season.
To be clear, I don’t think there is anything wrong with mums, falling leaves, and pumpkin patches… if that’s what helps you to enjoy this season, go for it! But for me this year (especially down here in Texas, where we are finally celebrated our very first week without temps reaching nearly 100°), I just needed simple. Anybody else feeling that right now?
So even if it’s not traditional “fall decor,” I redecorated my front porch, entryway, and living room with a simple neutral color palette for the season. And I’m excited to share it today as part of the Seasonal Simplicity home tours.

Easy, Neutral Fall Decor
Black and White Fall Porch Decor
I may or may not have left my Christmas garland up on my front porch this year until March (blame it on 2020, right?!). So I decided that neutral outdoor fall decor is really a better for me. The kind that could work year round. 😉
After neglecting my front porch for most of the year, I was ready for some curb appeal. And I was inspired by our new black and white color scheme on the back of the house.
So I started with some black pottery. Actually, I started with these gray pots and this blue pot, but I knew I wanted black pottery, so I painted them. Tutorial coming soon. 😉
I love how it contrasts the creamy brick. I’m still experimenting with what I can keep alive on this porch (since it gets such brutal afternoon sun).
I added this new outdoor rug under our doormat. And echoed it with some simple black and white striped ribbon on my DIY faux eucalyptus wreath. I love the look of the silver dollar eucalyptus against our front door.
Since it still looks like spring in these parts, I thought the year-round look felt right. But if you are more of a traditionalist, you could easily add orange pumpkins, yellow mums, or any number of classic fall porch decorating ideas to a simple black and white front porch palette.

Classic entryway with vintage rug
If you remember my entryway from years past, then you’ll notice that the Turkish rug in here is a recent addition.
We recently updated our entryway chandelier, and I wanted to give the whole space a slightly more elegant feel.
I love the warmth and texture that the vintage Turkish rug brings to the space. You can find my best tips for buying vintage rugs here.
It may not be the permanent landing place for this rug (I have my eye on a spot at the ranch where it might be perfect). But for now I’m loving the worn, cozy texture and darker color palette than what we had here previously.

Casual Elegant Living Room with neutral fall decor
The living room has received very few updates since our major makeover last fall.
I brought in some fun, seasonal vintage art with this little vintage owl printable (which you can download for free here if you like). And I added more neutral texture with this old black pot I’ve had for years. I love using things I already have to help create a seasonal feel.
Just as in the entryway, I kept the colors neutral while adding in texture like a velvet throw pillow and chunky blanket. A little faux fur on the piano seat and sofa bring in extra warmth.
The little brass end table is a new addition, inherited from my grandmother who passed away in the spring. So happy to have this little piece in here to remind us of her.
And in this image, you can see the sum of my fall decorating this year: refreshing spaces with a year-round mindset. Finding simple, neutral fall decor with lots of texture… using basically just year-round items.

I hope this inspires you that you can shop your house, layer on the snuggly blankets and soft pillows, light a candle, and enjoy a sweet autumn season in your home.

I love your home and your decorating style. Could you please tell me the source for your floor lamps that look like street lights? I absolutely love them. Thanks.
Hi Sherrill, they were outdoor lanterns purchased at Lowe’s about 15 years ago. Haven’t seen anything like them since…
Thank you so much for the quick response.
You are welcome!
Love what you create! Where did you find your lamps from?
Hi Abigail! I got the lamps from Lowes many years ago and I haven’t found another source or similar lamps since…
Hi Rachel,
Your home is lovely. I’m sort of wondering, though, about the wisdom of painting your pots on your lovely porch black. Won’t that make them absorb more heat, and possibly help cook your plants? I guess if you water them frequently, that might help. Just curious if you considered that with your hot Texas weather.
Hi Marilyn! That is a good thought! We do water them regularly as we use the backyard daily and they do fine.
Your home is so quietly beautiful. I love the soft hints of fall!
Thank you, Leslie!
Love your simple fall decor!
