American Flag Mason Jars

In honor of the upcoming Independence Day:

What says “Happy Birthday, America” better than mason jars?

I know many versions have been floating around Pinterest (you can follow me here, by the way!), but I found a beautiful tutorial here, and I decided to do it big (i.e. use quart-sized jars, rather than pint-sized) so I could use them as a centerpiece…

I also chose to spray paint the white (using a metal primer because that’s what I happened to have already in the shed!), and I found it much easier to work with than the acrylic. A little harder to distress… but not too bad.

  2. Love this idea! Not only will I be using this for 4th of July but for all patriotic holidays AND when my son comes homes from deployment!!!!!

  3. Rachel,
I was loving this idea and wanted to make some for myself, though I had some questions:
Did you spray paint all the jars white first? Or just two white and one blue?
What kind of paint did you use for the red and blue?

Sorry for all the questions, I’ve just never done painting on mason jars before.

    1. Hi Jill! So glad you like the jars. I only spray painted two of the jars white. For the blue jar, I used craft paint because that’s what I had on hand. I also used craft paint for the red. The spray paint (which was actually white metal primer because that’s all the white I had!) was harder to distress than the craft paint, but both worked fine. I also have used chalk paint on mason jars with great success; you can see that tutorial here: Hope this helps!

  13. Hi – I am in the process of making these. For the Blue one, did you paint the stars on after painting the whole jar blue? Or did you stencil lout the stars and paint white inside/blue around? Thanks! (Sorry I realize that’s a strange question!)

    1. Not a strange question at all, Kayla! I actually cut out a star from an old sponge and painted the white on top of the blue. Does that make sense? No stenciling required. 🙂

  23. Can you tell me about how many flower stems it took to fill each jar? Also what is the green you used? Thanks

    1. Hi Jessica, the flowers are called alstroemeria. You can buy them in big bunches at the grocery stores (in Texas, at least) for $5-6. I think this was just 1 bunch, but it may have taken 2 to fill all the jars (I can’t remember, sorry). The greens are just the leaves of this flower. Seriously, these are the lowest maintenance and most cost-effective cut flowers I’ve ever found! 🙂
