As often is the case, a personal quest for something I would love to have in my home has turned into a (hopefully useful) resource for you! This time? Our family of six has outgrown our kitchen table (which is actually a desk that I made with my dad before I left for college and then refinished the top a few years ago).

While I love so many things about it (not the least of which is the sentimental value it holds!), we simply need more leg room. The angled wrought iron legs are not conducive to a lot of seating. So the quest for a new kitchen table began…

I love the look of classic turned legs. While I wouldn’t characterize my style as farmhouse overall, I think a “farmhouse table” is about the most perfect thing for any kitchen. It evokes such a sense of togetherness, and while the turned legs are pretty to look at, their location at the outer corners of the big table also makes them very practical for seating a larger crowd. So today I thought I’d share with you some of my favorites. I’ve grouped them in some categories that I hope might be useful to you.

Small Farmhouse Tables

It’s true that the quintessential farmhouse table is large, but you can still get the same look in a smaller space with these options. Perfect for a breakfast nook or a smaller family, these could read completely rustic or be combined with some more modern chairs for an eclectic look.

Two-toned Farmhouse Tables

One of the most popular looks in these days of DIY furniture makeovers, two-toned tables can bring the warmth of a wooden top while offering an updated feel. If you’ve seen my dining room, you know I think two-toned tables are a great option. 😉

All wood tables can sometimes read pretty traditional, but a good-quality table with the right accessories is timeless. Here are a few in varying wood tones, including some really fun and chunky legs (side note: babies and tables only… all other “chunky leg” comments must be kept to oneself).

I gathered the rest of these because each stood out to me as a bit different than your run-of-the-mill turned leg table. There’s a concrete top (I absolutely love this one, by the way!), a two-toned with rather dramatic legs, and even an all-white one (which normally wouldn’t sound interesting to me, but this one is simply beautiful).

  1. Ooohhh, lovely choices. I love my table, but if I had to replace it, the Calistoga and Dalton are my favorites. Good luck in your search:-)

  2. We have always found pedestal to have so much more leg room.not sure how all those legs will solve your need for more leg room.???

  3. Just thought I would add something for you to consider when you are choosing your table. During my “french country period” it was a dream come true to be able to buy an Ethan Allen Normandy dining room set. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. The very FIRST afternoon it was in the house my boys sat down to do their homework, and forever after their math and english assignments were carved into the tabletop through the sheets of notebook paper they were writing on. Added to that were the dozens of times when a too warm dish left a white spot and I had to use a half a tube of toothpaste to bring back an semi-unblemished surface. I stored the two leaves under my bed and drug them out on a regular basis as the boys got older and I ended up with the whole pack at my dinner table. Eventually I had a “blinding flash of the obvious” It was beautiful, but it wasn’t working. Long story short; a series of tables evolved (from cannibalizing two tables to make one in 1980) to what I ended up with in 1992, and still have today. It’s a farmhouse style. It’s large for when I need it andbeautiful to decorate when I don’t. It has a natural wood surface that (once a year) I spruce up with steel wool and tung oil varnish to keep it looking brand new. A couple of heavy duty ladderback chairs at either end with a couple extras around the house for when company comes, and sturdy benches that accomodate 2 or 8 rowdy boys (to men) to grandsons. It’s my nod to function over form, and it’s worked for many years. I Love your site! Hope this is a help!

    1. Lynda–those are all great thoughts! I definitely don’t want something too precious that isn’t useful with kids around too.

  4. I liked them all, but would only suggest that you get one of the ones that extends or shortens. That has been the best factor in our last table. We are retired, but love that for family gatherings or when we need the extra table space, we can extend it. The versatility and practicality has outweighed the design factor for us….and we love the design!

  5. HI Rachel, I also love a beautiful turned leg paired with a unique top. The French Country Reclaimed Pine Table and Calistoga Dining Table get my vote for your space! Happy shopping… can’t wait to see what you pick!

  6. I have a two toned table that looks like mine, white on the bottom stained and planked on the top. It’s seats 6 very comfortably and also has an extension that allows us to fit 2-4 more. We purchased it over 15 years ago from Ethan Allen and I’m still in love with it! We raised our 2 kids and it’s seen a lot of use but still looks great!

    1. Great thoughts, Cornelia! That’s the beauty of this classic design. It lasts forever and transcends style!

  7. I love the French Country reclaimed wood table but $1400??? Id be checking auctions and estate sales for the makings and DIY. Were you in New England I’d have you eating at an amazing table in weeks or less for under $500 and probably less than $300. Must be something in Texas that is still reasonable.

    1. I agree it is pricey! It serves as inspiration for me too in case I wanted to achieve it via DIY.

  8. I love those wrought iron legs. I would be tempted to make a new top and incorporate them. But as you clearly love the turned legs as well, I’m sure you already have a new purpose in mind for that old beauty!

    1. I do love this table, but it’s the legs that make it difficult for us as a large family. I am scheming where to use it. 😉

  9. I love a farmhouse table, but in my small kitchen, it doesn’t work. Even though I have a dining room, that space is small too. I have a round pedestal table in there which works perfectly. Thanks for sharing your picks!

    1. I totally understand! I actually wanted to try a pedestal in our space, but it’s simply too long and skinny. You’ve got to go with what works!
