Now let me be clear: I am not a gardener.

But if there are two pieces of advice I could give anyone (especially those who don’t feel particularly plant confident), it would be this:

  1. Use fun containers (it can distract from a less than healthy plant 😉 ).
  2. Buy a jade plant.

Seriously, my mother took some clippings from my grandmother’s jade plant decades ago, and she now has 4-5 big pots full. 6 months ago, I took a clipping from her, and I now have 3 smaller pots full. Each time I kill another plant (gulp), I just clip a piece of jade and stick it in the pot. No more empty pots revealing my black thumb.

Like other succulents, jade grows roots and holds, even from a clipping. And it seems particularly happy indoors OR outdoors… Seriously, it’s my favorite. Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled tutorial:

  • find some fun containers (I used two copper mule mugs and a broken silver sugar bowl)
  • give your kids some dirt and plastic spoons and have them fill the containers most of the way
  • clip some pieces of jade
  • make sure you clear enough stem to stick down in the dirt (use the handle of the spoon to make a little hole for the stem)
  • finish off with a little more dirt and enjoy!

Note: since these containers do not have drainage holes, be careful not to overwater. Just use a spray bottle and lightly mist the plant every few days instead.

  1. These are beautiful! I’m always impressed with how well succulents grow – particularly jade plants. This is embarrassing but we brought two of our succulent planters with us when we moved. My husband left them in the car for an entire month and they still look amazing! So if that’s not a testament to how well they survive I don’t know what is 😉 Happy summer!
