Blue and White Bedroom Ideas for Summer

A simple, casual blue and white bedroom provides a wonderfully serene escape. These blue and white bedroom ideas are especially perfect for summer.

I’ve had white bedding my entire married life – 14 years and two days, to be exact (love our Memorial Day weekend anniversary 😉 ). And while I’ve accented our master bedroom with various colors over the years, the combo I’ve returned to most often is blue and white.

Jennifer from Town and Country Living had such a fun idea for this summer tour: a color tour. Each blogger is sharing the colors that say “summer” to her and why. Be sure to visit the other links at the end of this post for more fun summer color stories!

So back to my master bedroom… It has changed quite a bit from  what it looked like last May.

Our new bed is perfect in front of the window, and I’m loving the bedside table I refinished (click here for the full tutorial to get the raw wood look).

Blue and white stripes for summer

But I decided the space could use some more blue for summer: blue and white stripes, to be specific. There’s just something about blue and white stripes that says summer to me. Maybe it’s the nautical aspect?

Layering rugs in the bedroom

I have actually had this navy and white striped outdoor rug rolled up in my closet every since we created our outdoor dining area two years ago. I love the pattern and how soft it is, but I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to keep the large ivory stripes clean outside… so I brought it to a closet and forgot about it. Oops! When I began thinking about bringing a summer feel into this space, though, I thought layering this summer rug would be a great start.

Reversible throw pillows

I then turned around the pillows I made recently to show the back fabric (love the versatility of two-sided pillow cases!) and added an old indoor/outdoor pillow I picked up at IKEA a few years ago.

Shop the house to redecorate

That, a blue and white striped Turkish towel from a few years ago, my little faux olive tree, and a lamp that I brought up from downstairs and the mini makeover was complete. I love shopping the house – getting a new look without spending a dime is always fun!

As is often the case in my home, my master bedroom is a mixture of antiques, DIY projects, and new purchases.
vintage/antiques: trunk under window, clay church on dresser, bentwood table
diy projects: “raw wood” nightstand, blue dresser, curtain rods
I’ve linked the new purchases as well as many similar, shoppable items below!

  1. Hello Rachel,

Your house looks beyond beautiful. I was wondering what color you would recommend for kitchen cabinets in contrast to cameo white painted walls. My trims are very white and my floor is very similar to your wooden floor. Id very much appreciate your advice.

    Thank you so much,
    Julia

    1. So many options, Julia! Are you hoping for a deep contrast? I love SW Dove Gray, Dorian Gray, and Gauntlet Gray. I also love Behr Irongate; I almost painted my cabinets cameo white on top and Irongate on bottom, but I decided to go with Kraftmaid colors instead when we opted to replace the doors. I hope this helps!

  2. Rachel, it looks amazing, I love the simple iron farmhouse bed and plan to use one in my daughter’s room soon! Your style is so on point with no detail missed and I love it!

  3. I have loved blue and white since I was a child. Maybe it was because my Dad was a naval officer and blue and white are the Navy’s colors…lol. Summer bedroom colors are always blue and white, while winter colors are red and white with touch of blue. Have to put blue in somewhere during the winter to remind me of the blue skies and warm weather. Winters here are very cold.
Thank you as always for a lovely post.

    1. Aww! Thanks for sharing that, Claire! I am glad it inspired you and reminded you of your past.

  4. You can never go wrong with blue and white! Rachel, I adore your bed!! It’s so classic and timeless. I also love your table lamps. Such a peaceful and pretty bedroom. Thanks for joining this week’s summer colors tour!

  5. A bedroom to go and feel cool and relaxed in, perfect. I have tried other colors too but now i have blue and white too, i love those reversible pillows, great idea.Have a great weekend.

  6. Blue and white are my favorite colors for the home. Your bedroom looks clean and fresh. I love you new bed, but your old bed was beautiful as well. Just curious why you decided to replace it?

    1. Thank you so much, Cindy! Honestly, Mr Pax and I were both just ready for a change. The room is oriented in a way that the four poster really made the room feel chopped up (I tried to avoid accentuating it in the pictures I took, but it definitely felt that way in person). Unfortunately, the four poster was so large that it wouldn’t fit in our guest rooms and we didn’t have any storage space for it. So away it went to a happy buyer. 🙂

      1. I really like the bed you ordered, and have been thinking about ordering one as well. I’ve seen quite a lot of them online, from different manufacturers, so deciding which one to order has been a challenge. Are you happy with the one you purchased? Is it a solid piece? I’ve read some complaints (not on the one you ordered) about the beds missing nuts and bolts, being difficult to put together, that it squeaks, etc.

        1. Thank you, Cindy! I’m afraid I don’t have a very full review for you as we’ve only had it a few months. My husband said it was very easy to put together and their were no missing screws or bolts; he also said everything lined up well. It recently started squeaking a bit just when I sit up against the headboard to read in bed (ours is a few inches away from the wall since we have shutters for our windows directly behind it, so it has a little more stress than it would if it were leaning into a wall). My husband seems confident that he can make the squeak stop if he tightens the screws on that side, but we haven’t gotten around to it yet. Ha! Like I said, we are super pleased (for the price, especially!), but I don’t feel confident after just a few months to swear by it. I hope that helps!

  7. I really love what you’ve done with the white and blue. The reversible throw pillows and the rug on top of another rug combo are great ways to switch things up without having to invest in new items.

    1. Thank you! The walls are Behr Marquee’s Cameo White… and the trim was painted by the previous owners, but based on the cans they left for us, I think it is simply extra white (untinted, straight off the shelf) from Sherwin Wiliams. I hope this helps!

  8. Hello,
I absolutely LOVE this look and would love to do something similar in my guest bedroom. Do you happen to have a link for the brown round end table? I am looking for something just like that!

    Also, the wooden curtain rods?

    Thanks!
    Meagan

      1. Thanks do much, Rachel! I know this sounds weird, but I am not the most “internet search savvy”, so if you were to write in words how to describe or search for that end table, what words would you use?

        Thanks!

        1. Great question, Meagan, not weird at all! Honestly, I’ve struggled to find anything similar online to link for my readers, but I wish you more luck than me!! Sometimes I’ve heard those referred to as “bentwood” (because of the legs), but you could also just look for round side tables, perhaps in natural finishes. Good luck!
