5 Ways to Make a Room Cozy
Looking to create a cozy space? Get 5 easy tips for making a room cozy with these ideas inspired by hygge.
I have these slippers my grandmother gave me years ago. My husband refers to them as “those shoes.” 😉 They are fur-lined suede that’s been rubbed smooth, and the right one has a gaping 4″ hole running along the side seam that “talks” with each step… but I simply can’t bring myself to replace them because they’re the ultimate essence of cozy.
The kind of cozy you can wrap yourself up in, breathe a deep sigh of relief, and never want to leave. The kind of cozy everyone wants, especially as we head into the holidays…
As I wear my cozy slippers (who cares if it’s noon?), I thought I might share a few tips to help give your home that same, cozy feeling. And because you know that with four kids and the busy-ness of fall, I don’t have time for elaborate efforts, these are 5 EASY ideas on how to make your home cozy.

How to make your room cozy
You may have heard the word hygge (pronounced “hue-guh” – who knew? 😉 ), which is a Danish word describing the concept of slow, happy, cozy living. Whatever you call it, though, I think surrounding yourself with these elements can create a cozy room no matter the time of year.
Soft Textures
Faux furs, knitted wool, velvet, chenille… all the things that make you want to snuggle down or bury your face into your chair or sofa. And it doesn’t have to be costly or complicated; this diy throw blanket was super easy and inexpensive and provides loads of comfort. And for some of my favorite throw pillows, check out this post.

Layers for Warmth
Whether it’s throw blankets on every chair in your living room or extra covers on your bed, there’s something so very soothing about layers. Add warmth to your home with an additional throw rug or a bedspread folded at the foot of your bed.
Candles
I admit to being rather picky about scented candles (though this one has me swooning lately), but even if you limit yourself to unscented ones, candles can make your home feel alive yet calm. The flickering flames, the warm glow, and the simply beauty are a perfect embodiment of hygge or cozy living. And, of course, a fireplace can add to the effect, too.
Soothing Colors
You know I’m a sucker for all shades of whites: white bedding and curtains, white marble, cream rugs, natural linens… It doesn’t have to be dark and dramatic to be cozy. But whatever color scheme makes your room feel soothing to you – be it deep navy or crisp clean white – follow that path to your cozy space.
Natural Elements
I’ve already mentioned textured textiles, but natural textures like baskets can also help create an organic and cozy space. Even better, bring in some real indoor plants. I love my fiddle leaf fig trees and the major impact they have on a room. But if you want something lower maintenance, try a succulent. Read all about how easy they are to care for here.

Minimal Decor
I know I said 5 tips, but I always like to under promise and over deliver. 😉 So I want to add that cozy doesn’t have to be busy. At the heart of coziness is calm, and too much stuff can be mere materialistic distraction, which (speaking from personal experience) isn’t good for our budget or our hearts.
Creating a space with hygge
I have always believed that interior design is not just about pretty spaces; it’s about creating spaces that foster and encourage togetherness and beautiful, functional living. No matter the season, our souls love soothing spaces. And textures, warmth, candles, soothing colors, and natural elements can come together to make a space feel cozy. Like a giant cup of tea for your whole home. 🙂
