About a year and a half ago, we moved to a new city.  It was only about three hours from our former home, and Mr. Pax and I had both visited numerous times, but it was still daunting: starting over our lives and the life of our family of five.

But new doctors, new schools, new grocery stores, and new neighbors later, here we were: creating a life here.

The most important aspect of creating that new life was finding our church.  We started attending one early fall, and by Christmas, I found we had made several friends and really were starting to feel a part of the community.  And then they found out what I do for a living and asked if I would be interested in hosting a Christmas party.

For almost 50 people.

I admit that the idea was a bit daunting, especially because I hadn’t attended previous years to know what the expectations might be, and I tend to be a perfectionist about things like this most things…

But I’m so glad I said yes.

Mr. Pax and I had fun throwing up extra Christmas lights and collecting cheap wine glasses, and when the night came, it was perfect.

Did it go without a hitch?  Hardly.

But our home was filled with laughter, encouragement, and a true sense of family – amidst ridiculous holiday themed mittens and fake mustaches that appeared during the annual white elephant gift exchange, of course. 😉

Honestly, it was that night when my home truly felt filled with… family.

Not that I have any desire to replace our biological family, but living in a new town away from most of our extended family, it was such a sweet gift to find true community in our new place.  And so sweet and fitting that it would happen at Christmas time.

This weekend we will have those same friends family for our church Christmas party, and I couldn’t help but feel a touch sentimental and a ton thankful as I thought of the joy they have brought to our lives.  The table will be filled with appetizers and desserts and the room filled with laughter and cheer… I hope your dining room gets similar treatment this holiday season.

Now I know you always have questions on sources, so I have to say a big thank you to Balsam Hill for providing the beautiful magnolia wreath and garland you’ve seen in our dining room this year as well as the super realistic three-wick led candle I used in my centerpiece.  I think it all provided the perfect, Southern feel to our dining space this year.

If you’re a regular reader, you may have noticed that I replaced our dining room chairs this year. The antique ones that belonged to my great grandmother (you can see them in last year’s Christmas tour here if you want) are beautiful, but they are delicate.  After breaking three, we decided to put them away until our children are older or until we don’t use our dining room as much on a regular basis.  I replaced them with these cafe style chairs, and we love them.  They are sturdy and gorgeous.

New to the dining room this year also is my bar cart that you can see in the corner there.

I love the extra display and serving space it offers.  And I filled my demijohn with a strand of these copper wire led lights; they are my other new favorite. 😉
