Painted “Grain Sack” Pillow Covers

If you follow me (and I hope you do!), you’ve seen these pillows popping up around my house… I really wanted to lighten things up for the summer, and these pillows were just the key! Plus, with a new baby in our house, quick projects are all I have time for right now… and I know you’re going to love this easy one as much as I do!

I started with these pillow covers from Ikea. At $4 each, you really can’t go wrong. I’ve also made my own envelope pillows from drop cloth in the past (even more affordable!), but you can hardly beat $4 and zero sewing. 🙂

This was my first time to use Country Chic Paint on fabric, and I loved the result: durable and beautiful.

And, as I said, these grain sack pillows took mere minutes to make. I started with painter’s tape. Be sure to press the edges down firmly to avoid bleeding. I also put some scrap paper in the pillow cover to avoid bleeding through to the back. I then dampened my brush in water slightly (so the paint wouldn’t be too thick – I didn’t want it to feel crusty on the pillows) and painted Hurricane with a sponge brush. Be sure to remove the tape while the paint is still wet to achieve a crisp edge. After it dries (which only takes 15 minutes or so), you can make new lines, as desired.

Warning: Don’t wet your brush too much. Make it barely damp (blot on paper towel, as needed)… Too much water and the paint will bleed under your tape, like it did here. Oops! Thankfully, I just made this the back side, and I’m sure no one but me will even know. 😉

I had fun being creative with my designs. Here I did a double stripe… Real grain sacks have so much variety!

And I love how they turned out. I used them to lighten up my living room for summer.

And I enjoyed them on my guest room bed in our whitewashed attic.

I can’t decide where they’ll land permanently, but for $4 each, I love the light they bring to any space!
