Combo: Kids’ and Overnight Guests’ Bath
In the interest of time my sanity, I thought I’d take a break from renovation and projects for a bit and just share another stop on our home tour. Though every room in Maison de Pax is rather arriving than arrived, I’m pretty content with this room for now. This is our second full upstairs bathroom (we also have our master bath upstairs), and it is thus both the kids’ bath and the one for overnight guests. Our powder room downstairs serves for other visitors.
The goal I had in mind was three-fold:
- Complement the rest of the home
- Be light, bright, and cheery for my children
- Be sophisticated enough for overnight guests to feel comfortable and pampered
I like to think we accomplished that. This is what it looked like before:
Thankfully, the tile (which is a ceramic with a white and gray marble look, complementing the real marble in our master bath) is in pretty good shape, and the fixtures weren’t bad either, but it obviously needed a serious cosmetic makeover. I started with fresh paint (Silvermist by SW, the same as in the adjoining boys’ room).
I chose chrome accents to match the traditional look of our 1940 colonial (and to cut cost – did you know chrome is often cheaper than other options?). The towel bars are actually polished nickel instead because I found them on clearance, but the difference doesn’t bother me.
The tough part was finding the right mirror. Because of the location of the light switch and the proximity of the sink to the door, oval was my best option.
Once I had my fixtures in place, I opted to make the space kid-friendly with my toddler-sized towel hooks. They add just the touch of whimsy (and the opportunity to train my kids to clean up after themselves!) I was looking for in this kids/guest bath.
And I hope you saw last week the tutorial for the “sunbleached” frame that I hung above the toilet.
Finally, no kids’ bathroom would be complete without some hand-washing help! Plus, in a room with very little counter space, the extra surface is so helpful. When I realized how well the milk painted stool I recently did with my son matched the red accents on the towel hooks, I couldn’t resist adding it to the space.
And that’s it. No one every accused 1940 homes of devoting too much square footage as bathroom space. 😉 But the room works for us, and I enjoy it.
Do your guests have to share a bathroom with your kids? How did you balance the function of the shared space?
The pops of red make the space! And we have the same Elmo towel 🙂
Thanks, Melanie!! I think that Elmo towel is a must for almost every toddler. 😉
What a beautiful space! I love the wall color, fixtures and initials. You did a great job!

Thank you so much, Maggie!! You are so sweet. We have loved the bathroom, and I think the pop of red gives is just the character it needs. I’m so glad you like it! 🙂
Rachel, it looks so lovely & fresh in here! You did a gorgeous job!
Thanks so much, Brandi! It’s a fun challenge not to let two little boys dictate your home design. 😉
What a beautiful transformation! I love the room color and the red that you added. It is so pretty.

Thank you, Nancy! I think the red adds the character to the space. 🙂
I just love this, Rachel! I recently gave my kid/guest bath a makeover and I’m already itching to change a few things. LOL Pinning this as some lovely inspiration!! 🙂
Thanks so much, Laura! That’s the beauty of home decor, though, right? It’s always a process and the process is fun!! 😉
Love the bathroom! The colors are amazing! What color did you paint the walls? I love the shade. Also, I love the shower curtain. Do you remember where you got it? I noticed it stayed the same. Great choice. I’m redoing my master bath in gray & white with pink and red accents, but haven’t picked the wall color yet. Again, awesome job!
Lori
Thank you so much, Lori! The walls are Silvermist by SW – one of my all-time favorite colors. 🙂 And the shower curtain was from Bed Bath and Beyond 10 years ago (when we got married)… I have no idea if they still have anything similar, but it’s one of my favorite things we registered for! Good luck on your makeover, and thanks again for your sweet comment!
Where is the stool from? Thanks!
I think you found it… but it was IKEA redone.
