Autumn… Chilly breezes, fuzzy blankets, cinnamon spice, pumpkin lattes, and richly colored leaves tumbling to the ground in the crisp, cool air…
Unless you live it Texas where it’s still in the high 90’s, the leaves never turn, and you have to sweat your way through a hot cup of coffee. 😉
Ok, it’s not that bad (air conditioning is a life saver!), but seriously, it’s hard to really dive into fall decorating just yet. So I’ve embraced a few simple principles to help transition my home this year:
Early fall decorating with velvet pumpkins:
1. Embrace non-traditional fall colors
Blue doesn’t generally say “fall,” but it feels so much more right in my home right now… So I’m rolling with it. In fact, you’ll notice that many of my accessories in this space are more summery: blue and green glass demijons, wooden plates, and my giant fiddle leaf fig (my, hasn’t he grown?!).
If you like the look, be sure to check out my fall living room where I used many of these same elements!
2. Give a nod to coming cooler temperatures with textiles
A fuzzy plaid scarf-turned-table runner, velvet pillow covers, a knit blanket… All of these help bring the summery colors a step closer to fall.
3. Wait for real pumpkins and flowers
Let’s be honest, most places down here aren’t even carrying pumpkins yet, and if I did bring them in right now, they’d be rotten long before Thanksgiving. While I have been known to scour the earliest pumpkins I can find (for blog projects, of course 😉 ), realistically it’s more logical to wait until temperatures have actually cooled off significantly.
4. Bring in a single undeniable fall touch… like velvet pumpkins
I’ve always eyed velvet pumpkins in other people’s homes, but this is my first full set… and I’m smitten. The texture, beauty, and elegance of the velvet; the natural, organic, imperfect look of the real stems. I love the juxtaposition. And LoveFeast Shop offers handmade velvet pumpkins in almost any color scheme you can imagine.
How creative is the little mushroom, too?
They make the easiest elegant fall table centerpiece ever…
And they look just as fun on an empty table for everyday life (and yes, they’ve been like this in our home for over a week and they have yet to be used as a football… miracles do happen!).

Gorgeous! I love the blue with the copper. The homey plaid is a great juxtaposition with the elegant velvet pumpkins.
Mary Ann
Thank you! I thought that the plaid made things feel a touch more casual!
This is so pretty, Rachel! That velvet mushroom is amazing! I also love this rare shot of looking into your kitchen from this angle and that cabinet is gorgeous.
Hugs, Jamie
Thank you so much Jamie! I’m pretty fond of the little mushroom too. 😉
Love the blues and creamy neutrals together. Your wooden vessel adds such great texture to the vignette. It all looks so pretty in your chic dining room!

Where did you find the blue and white plaid tablecloth/scarf?! I need that ASAP!
Beautiful decor!

It was from the dollar spot a few years ago at Target! But, most fabric stores carry a wide array of plaids that I’m sure you’ll love!
Those pumpkins are gorgeous. I love how the color this season is blue.
Thank you, Megan!
