You all had so many questions when I first shared about the cabinets we chose for my parents’ new white and wood kitchen! I’m here today to answer them all and give a few more details on the choices we made in this kitchen remodel. There is a complete source list at the end of the post if you’d like to jump ahead!
The Kitchen Renovation
Before
The original space was not a terribly small kitchen, but it was very closed off from the rest of the home and had some awkward layout choices (not to mention outdated kitchen decor ideas).
Layout
I knew my parents wanted a more open kitchen design, with a generous bar to seat grandkids, but plenty of walking space so it wouldn’t feel crowded. We removed the wall separating the kitchen from the dining room and relocated the fridge to the opposite wall.

Paint
My parents chose Sherwin Williams Snowbound throughout their new home. It’s a lovely, neutral (or slightly cool) white and one of my absolute favorites. Read more about it and my other favorite white paint colors here.
White Oak Wood Floors
This is now the third home where I have used these floors. And we love them. They are a 7.5″ engineered European White Oak. We have the Montmajour color in our home, and we used the Rivera color at our ranch house.
The color we used throughout this home is called Larsson, and it is a beautiful natural color with a reclaimed wood look. The dramatic dark knot fills give it a slightly rustic effect.
White and Wood Kitchen Cabinets
The upper cabinets are Dove White by KraftMaid, and the lower cabinets and pantry are a Rustic Maple with a Husk stain. Both the white cabinets and wood cabinets have a Suede (which is KraftMaid’s matte option) finish. I wrote a whole post about all the cabinet details, which you can read here.
Honed Marble Backsplash
There’s a long backstory to my parents and their loved of marble backsplashes. Suffice it to say that this 4×12 bianco cararra honed marble tile backsplash was a no brainer in this space! We paired it with Platinum grout for a blended look (read all about my favorite grout options here).
Statuario Quartzite Countertops
Choosing kitchen countertops is tough! We needed something that wouldn’t look fake against the honed marble backsplash but would stand up to the rigors of my parents’ lifestyle. We decided that marble was too soft for them, and my mom just didn’t love the man-made quartz nearly as much as natural stone…
So we scoured the local stone yards until we found this quartzite. It has similar gray and white tones to marble, but quite a bit more movement than you find in most marbles. Quartzite is supposedly as hard or harder than granite, though, which is exactly what we needed! We ended up with a couple of gorgeous slabs of polished Statuario Quartzite, and we couldn’t be happier.
Apron front Sink and black Faucet
My sweet mom cooks just about every single meal, and my sweet dad washes just about every single dish. ☺️ He prefers a double basin sink for this duty. So we found this double basin farmhouse sink to give that slightly modern farmhouse kitchen feel.
We paired it with a sleek, simple, black faucet for a more modern effect.

Double Electric Oven
My mom needed a double oven, but we only wanted to give 30″ to the range in our kitchen layout. Also, they don’t have natural gas on this property… so this double oven range was the perfect solution for all those needs.
And how can you go wrong with the gorgeous white and gold finishes? My parents really wanted a mix of traditional and contemporary designs in this space, and this oven steals the show on the modern end.
Counter Depth Fridge
The only thing that we kept from the previous kitchen was this fridge. If my parents had to purchase one, I probably would have chosen one to match the range.
But this fridge was brand new and counter-depth (which we needed because of the sight lines from the breakfast room), and I actually kind of love how it complements the dark lighting and hardware. Plus, free is always good, right? 😉
Panel Ready Dishwasher
I love to use panel-ready dishwashers whenever possible. It minimizes the interruptions in the lower cabinets and allows ranges and decorative cabinets to be the focal points of the kitchen. My parents chose this dishwasher to sit just to the right of the sink because they already have this brand and love it!

Lighting
The pendant lighting over the island was essential in helping us to define a focal point in this asymmetrical kitchen space. Hunter Fan Company provided these light fixtures from their new lighting line, and I am in love. The mix of metals, the elegant yet modern lines, and the wow factor make these an interior designer’s dream.
We also used a wall sconce above the open shelving at the coffee bar which sports the same black and gold combo. Such a great affordable swing arm sconce option! And speaking of affordable Amazon lighting options, we continued the black and gold theme above the sink with this more modern pendant light.

kitchen cabinet Hardware
To add to the transitional design of the kitchen, we paired the more traditional raised panel cabinets with more rustic modern hardware. Sleek black cup pulls for the drawers, and a squared off knob for the doors.

kitchen island Barstools
I am always a fan of using lots of texture in neutral spaces, and these rattan and wood counter stools were simply perfect.

Vintage rugs are in my top 5 things every kitchen needs. 😉 And this one is no exception… Read this for all my tips on finding affordable vintage rugs.
Other kitchen decorating Accessories
My parents are actually fully moving into their new home next week!!! Until then, we just created this styled kitchen look with a mix of some of their antique pottery that they had already brought to the new house and my own vases and accessories.
The open shelving and glass cabinets provide loads of opportunities to show off pretty dishes and vases, though, and I’ve gathered a few of my favorite looks for you to shop below.

Rachael I LOVE this, you are so talented. How fun to have your mom and dad move close to your little ranch! Bet your parents can’t wait to move in to their new home.
They are so excited! Thanks, Jane!
This is my dream kitchen. I just love it! Great job!
I’m so glad you love it, Claudine. My mom is ecstatic!
Beautiful! What kind of ventilation is above the range? We just bought that same range and I need a range hood! Thanks!
Thank you! KraftMaid provided a vent insert that fit the hood they made. I’m not sure of the specs, but it is a 30″ vent fan insert. I hope this helps!
Hi Rachel, I love everything about this kitchen! I have purchased the GE appliances in the same color as the range in this kitchen and was wondering if you feel this is the right color for the walls with the appliances? My new kitchen will also have the two toned cabinetry.
Thanks. Pam
I absolutely love the look! And so does my mom.
Hello, love this kitchen. We are thinking of doing a dark oak for the island and beams. Do you think that would look good?
Hi Stephanie,
Wood in an island and beams is the perfect place to create natural warmth with painted cabinets.
Looking at the cabinets and drawers did you do a mixture of shaker and raised style drawers and cabinets?
All of these cabinets were choices from Kraftmaid!
