Sometimes I think I am my own worst enemy…

I hate clutter. I can’t stand mess. I twitch at the thought of disorganized chaos.

But – and here’s the problem – I am not a fan of detest organizing.

I’ll let you in on a little secret, though: it’s a whole lot more fun when it’s pretty. 😉

This closet under our stairs is the only hidden space in the entire downstairs except for kitchen cabinets. As you can imagine, it got filled up rather quickly: backpacks, raincoats, extra picture frames, and boxes full of books that are awaiting the building of our new bookcases. It was also – like everything when we moved into this house – beige from floor to ceiling. Needless to say, it was way past due for some major work.

This is the "before"... you won't believe the after! This closet is turned into a mini mudroom with some clever storage

How to turn a closet into a mudroom:

  1. Clean it up: Empty it and give it a fresh coat of paint if needed.
  2. Claim wall space: Remove (or move, if possible) any hanging bars taking up valuable real estate.
  3. Create storage: Add baskets and hooks for belongings.

You may have seen the shoe box I built for our entryway. It has served its purpose well, but we still needed a better system for backpacks, water bottles, coats, and – random though it may seem – my camera equipment. So I cleaned out the closet, moved the hanging bar farther back to free up some wall space, and gave it all a fresh coat of white paint.

The curved walls make it a tough space to organize, but the Calleo Collection by Threshold Branded (sold exclusively at Target, in store and online) was perfect for the front portion of the closet. The system is super versatile: you start with a rail (in a variety of lengths) and slide on baskets and hooks as needed to create your own customizable storage. You can find it in the home improvement section of the store, near the lightbulbs.

I started with 5 of the 21″ rails in gray (which is actually more of a gray washed wood look). I love that the rails are made from real wood. I added a mixture of baskets and hooks to suit our needs: one hook for each of my three kids’ jackets and hats and one basket for water bottles or gloves when the weather turns cold.

On the higher rails I added hooks for my wallet and hat and baskets for my camera equipment (most of which was being used to take these pictures, by the way… normally they are much fuller!).

You can also install the hooks directly into the wall, so I added four: two on this wall and two on the facing wall, one for my purse and one for each kid’s backpack.

And next to my pretty new storage, I couldn’t resist the addition of a little decorative stencil (the same one I used in my daughter’s room).

And mom might not even be embarrassed when the little ones leave the door open. 😉

  1. Very elegant! I’m inspired to get more organized already! My laundry room needs some serious attention. Love the stencil too. I thought maybe it was a wall decal. You have a beautiful style.
