Spring Master Bedroom

Looking for spring inspiration? I’m sharing my spring accents in a lovely, calming master bedroom.

Do you ever get a chance to look beyond something?

Take a wedding ring, for example. In reality, it is nothing but a piece of metal or rock dug from the earth and whacked with a few hammers and chisels… But there are two more ways to see it: first, it is the expression of that artist – the effort, vision, and manipulation of his or her hands. Second, it is the symbol of promise – the gift, sacrifice, and commitment of two people to love one another.

Who would want to stop at the first explanation when the depth and beauty of the second and third explanations await?

I’ve been thinking about this same premise in my home lately. It can be so easy to be trapped by the tangible facts: do I have this table, this rug, this style, this accessory. It can be so easy to focus on the material… when there is so much more to be found.

Is it wrong to look at my home and try to make it beautiful? I don’t think so. In fact, it begins to migrate into the realm of the artist at that point, and can be celebrated for its creativity… but it cannot stop there.

I hope to see beyond the pretty dresser I refinished and the industrial clock I made and rather see the beauty of revitalization and new life. And I hope to see beyond my cool old books and see a love of learning, a never-ending desire to expand my knowledge and experiences alongside the people I love.

I hope to see beyond the charming antique sewing machine that belonged to my husband’s great grandmother and see the reality of legacy. How am I serving and inspiring my children? What kind of legacy am I producing?

And I hope to see beyond my trendy hand painted sign and hear the words it shares echoed in my heart. To remember that all of this is a gracious gift from above.

I hope to see beyond the choice of “in style” white walls and bedding and see a peaceful retreat for myself and my husband. A place where we can unwind, get rid of the baggage of everyday life, and encourage one another.

I hope to see beyond my four poster bed and see the kindness and love my husband had (and continues to have) for me when he surprised me with it the day we moved into our first home. To see the grace of God in our years together and all we have learned.

I hope to see beyond my pretty trumeau mirror and see a reminder of the time we lived in France, the incredible and diverse community we had there, and the beauty of creative thought put into action.

Easter naturally gave me plenty of fodder for these thoughts. Looking both at his death and resurrection as well as beyond it – to see the life, hope, and joy possible through it – keeps me from dismissing it as just something else we do each year.

I know this final part of my spring home tour is rather different from part 1 and part 2. Thank you for entertaining my meditations today.

  3. Oh, Rachel. You have such a beautiful heart! What an inspiring post. These words are so needed in the design community, thank you for being vulnerable and sharing all the memories and thoughts with us.

  4. I enjoyed the tour and the stories your “things” tell. Thank you for sharing. Reminds me of the worship song that proclaims ” The Lord has done great things for us and we are filled with joy!”. How special that your home reads as a timeline for blessings and is filled with little reminders of the fact that were created for so much more than pretty “things”.

  5. What a beautiful bedroom! I absolutely love the wooden clock. I have a friend who builds stuff all the time…I think I found a project for him to make for me 🙂

    1. Thank you! The walls are Behr Cameo White, and the trim is Sherwin Williams Extra White (straight off the shelf). Hope this helps!

  6. Hello,

Just came across your lovely blog!

My name is Lindy Winchester. I read something in your blog that seemed real to me. What I mean by that is that my husband and I our in the mist of renovating our home. We are both born again Christians along with our 4 year old little girl. I am a home décor designer >> https://www.etsy.com/shop/WoodsandShore
yet….I am struggling with renovations. I have been blessed enough to have been featured in a few great magazines. I recently read a magazine called Life Beautiful and read a great article about allowing God into your décor. I always thought about it and prayed about it but never knew how to implement till I read the article and now I came across you! I think He’s up to something:) I wanted to ask you about the time your renovations take. You mentioned one room and one day at a time. I’m finding that model very difficult, for example I need to buy flooring for my shop office/shop but am looking at a potentially huge bill because I will have to buy flooring for the whole house…so it’s difficult to do one room at a time. Also…I’m just going to ask…What do you do for a living that you were blessed with a lovely home and able to do all the renovations? It seems to be taking so long for us and I’m not sure where to start. I want to be realistic about what God has blessed us with. I’m not looking to keep up with everyone else…just want to know how others do it.

    Thank you for any suggestions,

    Cheers
    Lindy Winchester

    1. Hi Lindy,
You are so sweet! I’m so glad you are enjoying the blog. And I understand completely what you mean about the struggle between allowing your renovations to be purposeful, affordable, and reasonable. I will say that it’s never a simple answer. I’m so thankful my husband has a secure job in the software industry that allows us to save money towards renovations, but we have also had times when there simply wasn’t any extra money for the project we really wanted to tackle. I think the biggest consideration for us when we are deciding what and when to renovate (and the one that has served us the best in the past and allowed us to earn money off each home we have renovated and sold) is the investment in the home that we are making when we do the renovation. Our first home was not in a fancy neighborhood, and it would have been easy to spend so much on a renovation that we never could have gotten full return when we sold the home. So instead of saving for fancy, elegant flooring, we opted for basic engineered hardwoods (which we installed ourselves) and really basic neutral tile. It still had the look we were going for, but it allowed us to make money when we sold the home rather than lose it. I also understand what you mean about needing to replace the entire floor in the house, and that’s another time when you have to ask yourself if it will increase the value of the home. If so, then save for it! Put other projects on hold and prioritize the one that will increase your home value and bring you the most pleasure. It sometimes takes years (I had a 4’x8′ hole in my kitchen ceiling at one point at our last house for about 8 months!) to save up what you need for the priority project, but I think it can be worth it. Satisfy the creative bug with some paint and diy art in the meantime. 🙂 I’m rambling a bit, but I hope this helps in some way… It is definitely a process! One to pray about, discuss with your husband, and consider your family’s needs. Of course, no amount of planning really satisfies, as we finally tackled our recent kitchen renovation only to find out (literally) two days after we ripped it out that I was expecting baby #4. Ha! Life goes on… I hope you and your family are able to find the right balance for you!
      xo
