The best space for you and your loved ones is almost as unique as a fingerprint: it will never be exactly the same as the best space for someone else.

One of the things I love best about interior design, in addition to the uniqueness of each person, is the uniqueness of each space. Even if you know exactly what “style” you love… the home, the natural light, the shape of the room… all of those contribute to the right design. And I’ve finally taken my own advice there and sold our previous bedroom furniture (which, believe me, was really hard to do because of this!!) and started recreating the room in a way that fits the space better (and don’t worry, hubby was totally on board 😉 ).

Spring Master Bedroom

I’m far from finished (and I promise a fuller explanation and details when I do), but today I want to give you a glimpse of our space and share with you some quick and easy tips for spring decorating because – let’s face it – you probably don’t start from scratch on your bedroom very often… but you have opportunity to do a mini refresh every season, right?

When springtime rolls around, I always want the windows open, the room cleaned, and a few lighter, brighter accents.

Simple Master Bedroom Decorating Ideas

1. Start with white bedding

I confess, this is actually my recommendation for every season. I have used the same white linen duvet that we registered for when we were married almost 14 years ago… until now. Crane &  Canopy was kind enough to send me their Lane White Linen Duvet cover, and I must say it was time for a fresh one.

Side note: many of my readers ask how I keep white linen clean with four kiddos… and for 14 years, no less. My secret? Oxyclean. I use both the powder kind and the spray and I just douse any spots in the spray then soak the full cover in a solution of the powder and wash. Sometimes I just toss the powder in the washer and push pause halfway through the cycle so that it can soak a bit. And I probably only do this every six months or so…

2. Add a linen throw

I love the white bedding base because you can build upon it in so many ways. For spring, I always put away my wool knits and fur throws, but I still like a little accent blanket. A linen throw (like this one, also generously provided by Crane & Canopy) is perfect: lightweight, neutral, and so soft.

3. Accent with colorful pillows

If there is any season when I want color, it’s spring. I recently made some pillow covers for some euro pillows from some fabric I’ve had lying around for a few years (I think it was given to me for free at a conference??). The most fun part, though, is that I backed them with some gorgeous, coordinating Nate Berkus fabric I found at Joann’s.

I like to make my pillow covers at least 2-3” smaller than the official measurement of the pillow insert. For example, these are 26” euro pillows, but I made my covers only 23” square so that the pillow would be nice and full. I planned to use the rest of the Nate Berkus material for a bolster pillow… we’ll see if I ever get around to it. 😉

4. Create a focal point with florals or greenery

I love a good flowering branch. This one may or may not have been clipped right off a tree on the side of the road.

The faux fiddle leaf fig tree functions as a nice green focal point, too… I have a full one (similar to this) which I do like, though I’ve actually been drawn to the more sparsely leafed ones like this lately. I also have a few readers who say this one is amazing… In short, you can’t go wrong!

5. Layer with small cut flowers

As usual, I love using unexpected containers for cut flowers (see some of my favorite ideas here). A few stems of stock from my local Trader Joe’s (the rest ended up in a pitcher on my dining room table) put into a copper canister from my kitchen adds just the right amount of life and scent in the space.

And because I know people will ask… I have linked similar shop-able items above, but here are an exact list of sources for this space.

nightstands – antiques | mirror (I painted mine white) | bed | duvet cover | gray throw | pillow inserts | curtain rods (tutorial) | curtains | rug, pitcher, lamp, basket for tree – Homegoods | chandelier | fiddle leaf fig tree | arm chair | medallion pillow | striped throw | copper canisters

Tips for changing your bedroom decor seasonally

And if you know me, you know I’m a bit of an efficiency freak. I love how all these things are so easily changed for the next season – minimal effort, maximum effect. 😉
