Serene Gray and White Little Girl’s Room

This serene gray and white little girl’s room is sweet enough for any little princess but sophisticated enough to double as a restful guest room.

___________

I want my kids to be kids.

To climb trees, to play imaginary games, to get lost in fantastical stories, to dress up, to sing silly songs, to relish life.

But I’ve never thought their rooms had to look like a toy store to accomplish those things.

Don’t hear me wrong, please. I’m not condemning those darling, childish, creative rooms out there… They can be so so fun! That’s just never been our style, which was convenient when we figured out that our almost three-year-old daughter’s room needed to double up as our guest room.

Long story short, we played musical beds in order to free up an actual nursery for our newest addition to the family. In our last house, we doubled up the nursery with the guest room for a while, and it worked fine. In this house, though, the secondary bedrooms are just smaller… and a double bed and a crib fill it completely, leaving nowhere for a chair or changing table. We decided we would all stay saner if the baby (and Mama) had some designated space. And that space is coming along… slowly. I guess I better hurry since I’m only 2.5 weeks from my due date!

But in the meantime, it meant some serious musical beds. If you remember, we set our daughter up with a darling day bed just last fall… and we loved it. But that bed moved into her brothers’ room (so she can sleep on the trundle when guests come), and she got the double bed and the antique dresser that were in the guest room.

Honestly, I love our stenciled wall with this new furniture just as much!

The antique dresser now holds her coloring books and little dress up accessories and toys…

And the closet holds her clothes, books, puzzles, and larger dress up. We keep just one bin (her stuffed animals) out in the room.

We pushed the bed all the way to the window so she could have more floor space to play…

But we can easily pull it more centered in the room when two guests are staying with us, allowing access to both sides of the bed. And the chandelier I hung to function as a “bedside” lamp works well for the transition since we don’t have to rearrange cords. You can read that full tutorial here if interested.

I still love the clock I got for her nursery at the last house, and the artwork was actually made by a sweet friend of mine for her original nursery, too. I dusted it off and hung it up just last week. I figured there can be no better reminder for a little girl growing up in today’s world than that she is “fearfully and wonderfully made.”

Oh, and yes, that’s a little sneak peek of the new bathroom! More to come… after maternity leave. 😉

In the meantime, she is loving her big bed (they’ve already decided that under it is the perfect “house” for her dolls). She is loving letting guests sleep in her room when they come. She is learning to share, to open “her home” to others even at such a young age, and I think it’s going to work for us.

As with most of my spaces, it’s a mix of antiques, thrifted finds, and newer pieces, so I’ve included a “shop the look” as well as an exact source list for you below. I know it’s not the most spacious room, but I feel it is serving its purpose for our family. What do you think?

  1. I think that this room is delightful, and especially ideal for “quiet time”. I no longer have little ones but I do have a guest room, that is a little on the small side, and your room is inspiring me to freshen it up. I’m about to take a look at your stencil tutorial 🙂
    Have a wonderful day!

  2. It’s gorgeous Rachel. So serene.
And I totally get the whole “toy store kids room” thing. Of course, I have nothing against that playful style, I just know it’s not for me.
