Peter Strikes Back: A Thrifted Memoboard

“Peter” (aka my guest room whose decorations were repeatedly robbed by other rooms in my house) has finally done some taking of his own.

This fabulous little memo board started out like this.

A little rough, but for $3 at my local thrift store, I couldn’t pass it up! I originally painted it using MMS tricycle milk paint (leftover from my red dresser) and had intended it for my office:

But I wasn’t loving the red. And I’ve been working to keep my office-type materials as subtle as possible since my office is sort of the library / sitting room of the house. Anyway, I realized that a chalkboard would be a nice, easily changeable touch to the nursery / guest room, but a re-paint job was needed. I mixed up some chalk paint (see more about homemade chalk paint here), using SW Dovetail and gave it two coats:

I then distressed the edges (which do have a subtle red tint for fun) and used some paste wax to finish it off.

I love the result! Though I plan to restyle it a bit, I do love the curvy lines of the memoboard with the straight farmhouse lines of this dresser. Incidentally, this dresser was my first piece of furniture to paint and distress. It came out of my grandmother’s attic years ago, and I love its primitive yet delicate nature.

What do you think? Did Peter get a good deal?
