Modern Farmhouse Style: Home Tour
Love that modern farmhouse style? See how these homeowners took a true fixer upper and gave it a crisp, modern makeover. So many great ideas and DIY projects!
___________
One of life’s greatest pleasures is meeting a friend who can truly be called a kindred spirit. When I heard that there was another gal at Bible study a couple of years ago whose two children were named almost exactly the same as my two oldest, I knew I had to meet her. Two years and countless hours at Chick-fil-a later, I couldn’t be more thankful for her friendship.
One (of many) of our greatest connection points has been our love of design and DIY. When she and her husband bought their home near Austin, TX several years ago, it was definitely ready for a face lift. On 3+ acres and just across the street from a charming horse farm, the home had so much potential, and they were up to the challenge. Sadly, they are moving away, but I wanted to share with you a glimpse of the incredible modern farmhouse style home they created.
Before I do, though, I want to show you a couple of before pics so you can see just how incredible the transformation really was…
And now, the charmingly modern farmhouse.
I have quizzed the poor homeowner for as many actual sources as she can provide (though warning: many are thrifted or vintage – they did this on an incredible budget!) and included those where possible. I have also included some “Get the Look” suggestions of similar items you can find online if you’re interested. This post also contains affiliate links. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.
From its black and white facade with modern steel railings and charming dormer windows…

To its dramatic black porch swings…

This porch and entry simply screams welcome.
Inside, the living room kept its Texas charm with the large stone fireplace and rustic wood mantel….
wall color: BM Black Horizon | furniture: thrifted
But the space was given modern life with this incredible chesterfield sofa and mid century modern credenza.

The living room can be seen from the breakfast nook and kitchen which, I confess, are my favorite spaces of the home.
And seriously, my friend and her husband did ALL the work themselves.

And the two bedrooms are dramatic and fun for their little boy and girl.
The master has a relaxed, almost boho vibe with beautiful treetop views out the windows.

And the master bath is a showstopper, isn’t it? The vanity area alone is stunning…

But the wet room and that little wooden stool have me smitten.

What do you think? Isn’t it amazing?! I hope you enjoyed the tour as much as I did. I actually have so many amazing pictures of her gorgeous kitchen that I’m planning a full tour of that space to come, so get ready! What’s your favorite part?
My daughter has a home just outside of Austin in Bee Cave that she and her husband gutted and redid very much like this home presented. Now I see where she got her ideas!
I bet it’s beautiful, Jeanne!
It is a great place with wonderful views. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, Marlene! So glad you like it. 🙂
Where are the pillows from on the couch?? And the rug in the kitchen and in front of the couch?? Also the mirror in the kids bath ?? Love it all exactly the look I’m going for in our new home. Thank you
The pillows are from Target, the rugs were Craigslist finds, and the mirror in the half bath is linked below the image in the tour. I hope this helps!
You always post the BEST stuff!
Inspiring, as always!
Amazing re-dos!
You’re so sweet Pat. So glad you like it!!
WOW!! Your friends are really gifted and so blessed to be able to do such a task. Did they do anything like moving walls etc.? The layout and the front steps are perfect. I wish I were there to see it in person. TFS such a wonderful home with us.
Thank you for your sweet comment! They did an amazing job, didn’t they? They opened up the kitchen by removing the half wall and cabinets, and I think they opened a doorway, but otherwise it was already layed out like you see… 🙂
Thank you for the info.
Beautiful! Do you know what type of flooring is in the living room? Is it real wood or engineered?
Thank you! The living room is actually laminate. It was already there when my friend moved in, and it was in excellent condition (one of the only updates made to the home before they bought it), so they kept it. I hope this helps!
Beautiful home!! The bed in your daughters room, where is it from?? Love it!!
Thank you so much! It’s actually my friend’s home, and she found the bed at the Restoration Hardware outlet.
Your friends did a lovely job on their home! Do you have any info on what they used for the railing around the front porch? Love it so much. Thank you.
Sorry for the slow reply! It’s cedar framing (painted white) and some kind of heavy duty wire screen. I hope this helps!
Can you tell me where I can get those porch swings?? <3
The porch swing was a refurbished piece, sorry!
Hi, GORGE kitchen!! What color did you use on kitchen cabinets? They are perfection!!!!! Thank you!!!
It is beautiful, isn’t it? It was a friend’s house, though, not mine… and all she could tell me was that it was a black color available at IKEA at the time. I’m not sure if it’s the same black they carry now or not, but I would think so? I hope this helps!
