How to Make a Balloon Garland
Balloon Garland makes a perfect decoration for any celebration! Learn how to make a balloon garland the easy way.
Balloon garland is so easy to make, and with the millions of colors of balloons available, you can match it to any party theme. Customizable and simple, balloon garland is the perfect decoration for birthday parties, baby showers, weddings, and more.
With four kids and zero desire to spend inordinate amounts of time or money on a few hours of birthday fun, Mr. Pax and I consider ourselves the masters of the “micro party” (a term we’ve coined ourselves to mean a very small birthday party for our kiddos: 2-3 guests max 😉 ). The key is to pick just a couple of friends, find something fun yet easy, and put a tiny amount of extra effort into something special. This year for my girls, the “something special” was a beautiful naked cake (get all the tips on making naked cakes here) and this incredibly fun balloon garland.

- it’s easy
- it’s inexpensive
- it makes a huge impact
- it’s perfect indoors or outdoors
What you need to make balloon garland:

- 5-10 balloons per foot of desired length (depends on the size of your balloons and the fullness of the garland)
For this garland, I used these coral balloons, the rose gold and champagne balloons from this set, and these green balloons. - twine and scissors
- air compressor and blower attachment (or at least something like this… I would not recommend blowing these all up with your own breath! 😉 )
Balloon garland tutorial:
- Cut twine to your desired length (add ~2 ft per side for tying) and tie between two chairs so that the string is taut
- Determine a pattern for your balloons and blow up the correct number, tying them off as you normally would (tip: buy different size balloons or blow up the balloons different amounts to achieve even more variety…)
I blew up all the coral to a medium size, the champagne balloons large, the rose gold small, and the green half large and half small. My pattern was: coral, large champagne, small rose gold, coral, small green, coral (the next time I repeated it, I used a large green instead)… Your possibilities are truly endless! - Cut 3-5″ pieces of twine for each balloon.
- Tie pieces of twine around the knot of each balloon (one time is enough, as shown).
- Choose your pattern (see above) and tie balloons onto the main string one at a time.
- Slide the balloons closer together as you add more and more. Feel free to tie each balloon tight against the main string or to tie some 1-4 inches away from the main string for more bulk to your finished garland.
Balloon Garland Photo Backdrop
The balloon garland also makes a gorgeous photo backdrop (especially with the DIY giant paper flowers I made for my daughter’s nursery)…
And it was the perfect outside decor, as well, as we were able to secure both ends (just tying the extra 2′ of twine). The wind was blowing hard that day, but the balloon garland held up beautifully!

Such a great idea! I love it. We have one child, but when she was born, we didn’t have a lot of disposable income for birthday parties. Our solution for the “favors” which everyone here seemed to think was important to give to the party guests was to shop the Dollar Store. We found lots of cute ideas for “favors”, set an amount limit, and often had enough left over for decorations. Instead of cake, we did cupcakes, so easy for small hands to hold. Simple things always seem to be great ideas.

I love this, I’m planning on making a green dinosaur themed one for my son’s 3rd birthday party. I was just wondering though, how did you secure it to the wall? The venue my son’s party is being held at will only let me use blue tac to put decorations up with. Do you think it will hold? Thank you for taking the time to create this tutorial 😊
Is there anyway to suspend it with string or 3M hooks since they are non-damaging? Blue tac isn’t probably the best choice to keep it tacked to the wall.
