I love creating holiday tablescapes. The excitement of the upcoming celebration. The beauty of the scene. The enjoyment of seasonal flowers and produce. The chance to use that fun tableware that doesn’t get a lot of use…

But even I will admit that they aren’t always practical. Sometimes for holidays you just need to focus on the food, or the people, or the travel, or the whatever. But today’s Christmas tablescape is infinitely easy. Simple. Classic. Natural. And gorgeous (if I do say so myself 😉 ). So I’m thrilled to share it today as part of Designthusiasm’s Styled + Set holiday entertaining ideas. Be sure to head to the end of the post to see all the amazing ideas.

But first:

Five holiday table hacks to make a perfect Christmas tablescape.

1. Make the world’s easiest napkin rings.
Check out my video for my favorite holiday hack for napkin rings.

2. Use a sheet as a tablecloth.
I love to use different things on my table: scarves, blankets, and runners… But a simple white sheet is one of my favorites. Why bother with an expensive tablecloth? A clean sheet does the job perfectly.

3. Create a natural centerpiece with small wreaths.
This is one of my favorite centerpieces to date. I found three small wreaths at Trader Joe’s for $5 each. Laid next to each other and filled in with a couple of pillar candles and three brass candlesticks… about as easy as you can get with natural centerpieces. You could always use faux wreaths, as well, of course. And if you prefer symmetry (I, personally, prefer balance to actual symmetry, but to each their own!), three wreaths with three pillar candles is about as simple and easy and elegant as you can get.

4. Add something unexpected to your centerpiece.
You saw the three wreaths and simple candles… but the bells really make it beautiful. These were super affordable at 50% off at Hobby Lobby last year. I cannot find the same ones (at least online) this year, but these sleigh bells and these gold bells look pretty similar. Essentially, though, anything could work: bells, ornaments, a wrapped present, reindeer figurines, whatever… just something to add a touch of whimsy or elegance to the simple greenery of the centerpiece.

5. Create a contrast.
See those rustic wood chargers? The natural greenery, the gold flatware, the classic white plates, and the gray linen napkins all read simple, crisp, and elegant. Beautiful? Of course. But the addition of the rustic, irregular, asymmetrical wood slice chargers gives the whole table an organic interest it was otherwise lacking. I love a good contrast. Whether it’s a pop of metallic amidst a casual scene, an antique in the center of a modern table, or a touch of rustic amidst a classic set… The contrast is what gives the whole space its intrigue.

And because I can’t resist, here’s a bonus tip:
6. Add at least 2 other things in the room to complement the look.
I know this just sounds like more work (and it is, admittedly), but I’m telling you: two small touches to the rest of the room can work wonders in the wonderland feel of your holiday table. Rather than just feeling like a fancy spread, it feels like a fully transformed room. I opted for a simple green tree and a hand-lettered sign I made a few years ago. The green tree obviously echos the centerpiece…

  3. Love the simple, natural look here! It’s a wonderful backdrop, letting the peace of the season, the people and of course, the food take center stage. My favorite part is your simple green tree with white lights! I liked my tree better like that too this year but then felt compelled to decorate it.
