DIY Mud Room Unit

Oh my, this post has been a long time in coming, hasn’t it? I first shared my inspiration for our laundry room makeover last September (yikes!), and I am now ready to reveal the room one corner of the room. Ha! But it’s a fabulous corner. Check out our gorgeous new mud room unit:

Let’s remember where we started when we moved in two years ago.

After a little lipstick on our pig, we had a cuter but still-not-very-functional space.

Now, we’ve pulled up the floor, moved the washer and dryer to the other side of the room, built fabulous cabinets, and painted and painted and painted… And the mud room unit, at least, is finished.

We started with a window seat built from 2x4s and plywood with 1x2s used for facing the cubby. On top of that, we used vertical 1x10s which Mr. Pax trimmed with a jigsaw to give them those gorgeous curves. We then surrounded the bases with decorative baseboard to give it a more finished and stable look.

We used more 1×10’s for the shelves and faced the edges with decorative molding ended at a 45 degree angle.

As a mother of two boys (with a hubby who wears hats, too), I love our little hat shelf! They used to hang on the same hooks as our bags and always got tangled up.

We ordered these beautiful knobs from Amazon to hang our bags and staggered them to maximize our space. The cross pieces (into which we secured the knobs) are just 1×4’s whose edges we routed with a decorative bit.

I love the crystal tops of the knobs; I think they are especially beautiful in this light-filled room.

Speaking of the light in this room, it’s so lovely that I have been tempted ever since we bought the home to try to turn it into some kind of breakfast room (since it’s just off the kitchen), but there’s not really any other good place to move the laundry to… So laundry room it will stay. I can’t wait to show you the other features of the room, though: front loaders with (eventually!) a sink and countertop, more beautiful cabinetry by Mr. Pax, a little wine fridge, and a window seat with tons of storage… I’m loving it!

Of course, it didn’t hurt that it was dysfunctional for several months; there’s nothing like the absence of a functioning laundry room to make you appreciate it even more! 😉

  4. What an amazing space- so great to have that bench with hooks above. Our laundry room is so narrow it is only a pass through but I won’t complain because just having a mud room entrance is an amazing thing!! Great job on this, pinning for future inspiration:)
