DIY Modern Black and Wood Wall Clock
Looking for fun, dramatic, rustic modern wall art? A DIY modern wall clock is so easy to build. Learn how to make this DIY black and wood giant wall clock for cheap!
If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that we used to DIY a lot, like practically everthing at our last house, for example. But as my husband’s travel for work has increased (and the number of children in our family – ha!), my DIYs these days are more geared towards curtain rods, wall hooks, and paper flowers. And even those smaller projects have become less frequent lately… but I’m thrilled today to say that I got my DIY on again just for you. 😉
If you’re visiting from The Design Twins, welcome! I’m excited to be sharing this project today as part of a group organized by Tana (Your Marketing BFF) and Janine (Happy Happy Nester); be sure to visit all the fun projects at the bottom of today’s post.
Modern Wall Art for Kids’ Bedroom

So today’s little project was inspired by a desire to finally finish tackling my boys’ room. It is actually the bonus room in the house, so it doubles as playroom and (with it’s two cool little alcoves) a perfect shared bedroom for my boys. We started almost two years ago by planking this little nook for my younger son (you can see my full tutorial on this super easy planking here)… and then we kind of just stopped. Oops.

I want to create a clean, simple look in here, though, with some high-contrast accents for a fun vibe. Their reading room (seriously, the most fun place in the house!) has plenty of color, so I’m going neutral in the main room. And since my kindergartener just learned to tell time on a clock “with hands,” it seemed a perfect project to start finishing off the space.
Materials needed for a DIY wall clock:
- 1/4″ plywood or project board (mine was a scrap leftover from another project)
- small scrap wood
- jigsaw (since people always ask, I’ve linked the tools we have and love!)
- chop saw or hand saw
- palm sander
- black paint
- high torque clock kit (I was actually looking for matte white ones, but these silver ones were the closest I could find in a nice, modern shape… Thankfully, against the black, they read almost white. And I guess I could always paint them eventually.)
How to make a large, modern clock:
- Draw a circle on your plywood your desired size; mine is ~24″ in diameter (tip: use string and a nail and a pencil to make a makeshift compass if you don’t have something the right size to trace)
- Use a jigsaw to cut out your circle
- Sand rough edges and the face with a palm sander
- Paint clock face black (I used just one coat of black chalk paint because I wanted the wood grain to show through a bit)
- Drill a hole in the center of your clock face (the size will depend on your clock kit)
- Cut tiny chips of scrap wood (make sure they are thin enough not to interfere with your clock hands’ functionality)
- Use a ruler to draw lines around your clock face (tip: measure a specific distance from the edge of the clock – I did 1/2″ – this will hide any imperfections in the roundness of your clock 😉 )
- Use wood glue to secure your wood chips on your lines (tip: weight them down with another piece of plywood as they dry)
- Follow the directions on your clock kit to install the mechanism
The clock mechanism even has a hanging spot for a nail. So slap one up there and hang that baby!
It’s super lightweight, and in the end only cost the $10 for the high torque clock mechanism. Always nice for something that will be hanging in the playroom. 😉
