Have I mentioned we have FOUR kids?! I still can’t believe it. And in typical former-English-teacher and self-proclaimed-nerd fashion, I may or may not have named the last one after a Shakespearian heroine. Again.  Let’s just say that little Rosalind (aka Rosie) was the inspiration for this little diy hanging printable botanical.

Obviously. 😉

I’ve made a similar piece before, but I found a new passion for this style when I tried it not with the regular dowel I used in the past but with a little piece of molding, giving it a more elegant appearance. And there’s a secret little step in the middle that helps really bring out the dimension in the wood.

The best way to print botanical wall art:

But first thing’s first: how to print a large image affordably for wall art. I uploaded my public domain botanical image (see below for the free download!) to Staples.com poster printing services. I set the orientation to “portrait,” the size to “18×24,” then uploaded the file. After choosing approving the design of the image, I chose “Photo Semi Gloss” as the material and “none” as the finishing. I have used colored engineer’s prints for framed botanicals before, but for this one without a frame, I wanted a higher quality paper and image. And I love the quality of the poster it provided.

Now without further ado…

How to create a diy hanging printable botanical:

Looking for large, inexpensive wall art? Try this step by step tutorial for a diy hanging printable botanical!
  1. Gather your materials.
  2. Cut two strips of molding the width of your printed botanical.
  3. Stain molding with color of choice and allow to dry.
  4. Use white wax to give your wood a weathered look and accent the dimensions of the piece. If you don’t have wax on hand, you can mix a little white chalk or latex paint into clear wax for the same effect. Allow wax to dry.
  5. Staple print to the back of the molding – one at top and one at bottom.
  6. Staple a length of twine to the top molding to hang the piece.

And that’s it! You’ve probably seen it hanging in my daughter’s room already.

Now, in search of the perfect Rose for her wall, I browsed The Graphics Fairy (one of my favorite sites for free images) and came across several that I thought were simply lovely. So I’ve formatted them all to 18×24 so they are ready for that medium size poster in case you want to make your own.

  1. Rachel these are beautiful!! And you know I love roses! When I get ready for them in Hallie’s Room, I’m gonna do this!

  2. What a clever way to hang a print! Thank you for the tutorial. I think I have some old thin frames I can dismantle and use the moulding. I’ll be looking for some fun mouldings the next time I’m at Lowe’s or Home Depot too.
