DIY Chalkboard Tags
I love organization. Crisp, clean, everything-in-its-place… But with two kids and another on the way, it’s an ongoing challenge, to say the least.
I could spend my entire life cleaning up after my children, but I don’t want to (who does?!?!), not just because it’s not my idea of fun, but because I want to help my children learn – even at an early age – how to take responsibility. Just like my toddler-sized towel hooks, these chalkboard toy-bin tags have been an amazing tool in facilitating that responsibility.
And if you don’t have kids, they’re still a cute, inexpensive way to label bins or boxes around the house! All you need are the following:
- wooden craft tags
- chalkboard paint
- drill
- needle and black thread
Just drill a little hole in the top corners of the wooden tag, paint both sides with chalkboard paint, and make a few rounds with the black thread to attach the sign. Then label with regular chalk (not a chalk marker, as they won’t erase from the porous surface of the wood). My stitches were rough and imperfect, but they hardly show.
And the chalk images I drew have certainly been smudged by little fingers, but after almost a month, they’re more than legible. And, more importantly, my 1 year old can even figure out which box he needs and how to clean it all up!
And while we’re at it, I’ve got some amazing art skills, don’t I? 😉
No really, I love chalkboard labels for these things. The pictures allow my non-reading children to know where things go, and it gives Mommy a little sanity. Win-win, right? Also, if you have hard-plastic storage bins (we managed to break those somehow… hence the new toy storage you see here) and would like to try a chalkboard label, consider this chalkboard contact paper and a chalk marker like I used to create labels for my son’s birthday party. There are wonderful chalkboard options for almost any surface, and I hope you find something that helps you and your family stay sane and organized, too!
