DIY Birch Bark Wine Charms
Entertaining for the holidays? These little numbered birch bark wine charms are the perfect accessory for your party so your guests can keep track of their glass!
_________
There was a season about 10 years ago when hosting wedding showers was something I could do with my eyes shut. I am sure I’m exaggerating, but I feel like there was a 2-3 year period when I hosted at least one each month… For that season, I made little wine charms using wire earrings and different colored beads. It worked like a charm (*see what I did there? 😉 ). For the holidays, though, I thought it would be fun to try something a bit more seasonally appropriate.
We hosted 50 people last year for a Christmas party, and I was determined not to run out of wine glasses (it was a chore to find even that many!). To help our guests hold onto their glasses throughout the night, I made these little wine tags using cut circles of birch bark and a wood burning tool (and I have every intention of using them again this year!)… So when my friend Lory from Designthusiasm invited me to join this Holiday Entertaining series she’s hosting, I thought these would be the perfect project to share. If you’re visiting from Design, Dining, and Diapers, welcome!!
Here is what you need for DIY birch bark wine charms:

- birch bark sheets
- a quarter and some strong scissors (I love these), or a circle punch like this
- wood burning tool
- small hole punch
- wire earrings
How to make your own wine charms from birch bark:
- Trace your quarter to create the number of circles you need (or skip to #2 if you have a punch).
- Cut your circles.
- Punch a hole near one side of each circle.
- Use the fine tip point of your wood burning tool to write numbers on each charm.
- Be sure to write the numbers on both sides of the charm.
- Thread a single charm on each wire earring.
- Put the wire earring around the stem of each wine glass.
I love the wintery texture of the birch bark and the versatility of the numbers… You can create exactly the number you need and not worry about running out of colors like you might if you were using colored beads. So no matter the size of your party, these will serve you perfectly.
If you decide to try this project these holidays, just be sure to enjoy a glass for me. 😉

Love the birch bark charms!
Thank you so much, Linda!
I love this idea, especially for a large group of people! I can’t imagine where you store 50 wine glasses throughout the year.
Quick question — I’ve ready your blog photography posts, but how did you achieve that incredible bokeh on your photos?!? Obviously low aperture, but I’d love if you’d share your photo specs for those so I can practice myself!
Thank you in advance!
Haha… Those upper cabinets that I can’t reach without a stool work quite well. 😉 And I think there were two keys to that bokeh: being close to the wine glasses and being far from the tree (it was in the other room). The shot was take with a 50mm lens on a Canon Rebel: ISO 200, f-4.5, 1/30 sec shutter speed. Hope this helps!
You’re the best, thank you SO MUCH for sharing! I’m going to try this type of photography this week & hope I can achieve the same beauty you captured.
You are so welcome! Good luck. 🙂
How fun are these?! You are so creative, Rachel, and this is such a fun way to add your personal touch! And I love your dining room too 🙂
Thank you so much, Tamara! xx
Love your little wine charms, Rachel! And Sauvignon Blanc … nice choice!
Thanks, Jennifer! One of my favorites. 😉
Rachel, what a fabulous idea! They turned out wonderful but what I’m most amazed with is that you entertained 50 people!! Congrats on that feat! But I can see where the tags would come in handy… 🙂 Lovely entertaining idea!!
Haha… Thanks, Lory! Where there’s a will… 😉
Rachel this was so creative and beautifully set up friend! I will be trying these out soon!
Thank you so much, Annie! xx
This is a great idea, Rachel. I love the handmade touch on the bark. I’ve always wanted to try that. And hello bokeh lights!! Happy holidays!
Hugs, Jamie
