Yesterday I piled my kids into the car at 12:30pm to head to the store. Only two of the five of us had real clothes on, and none of us had eaten a thing. We ran an errand and then (the kids) ate kolaches and donuts for lunch because the line was shorter there than Chickfila. No joke. Gold star parenting right there. 😉

I admit that at that point – even though it was on my to do list for the day – decorating the front porch seemed not only incredibly trivial but near impossible.

But when we got home from our frantic errands (purchasing things I need to cook for Thanksgiving, of course), the oldest three went off to play. And play. And play.

And right as the sun was setting, as they were happily playing tennis baseball (which, yes, is exactly what it sounds like) in the front yard, I brought a big picnic blanket out for the baby and got to work.

A lounge chair for me (because my kids play baseball in the front yards most days)…
A few lanterns and a planter box with a mini tree. Easy peasy.

It doesn’t take much, and sometimes it may seem like it will never happen… But a few touches at the front door can make such a sweet difference. To welcome others in. To start the day off right. To become a platform to enjoy and enter into the beauty of the season.

I hope this both inspires you in your front porch decorating and in your life – to remember that pajama-clad days and lack of routine are both ok and normal at this crazy season… but also that they don’t preclude us from some order and beauty, as well. I hope you get to enjoy a lovely sunset, too – preferably with tennis baseball in the background. 😉
