Being a mom has to be the most amazing, rewarding, exciting… and hardest thing I’ve ever done.

It’s funny. I realize that there are millions of moms all over the planet, but it doesn’t change the wonder of it for me. In fact – if anything – it gives me some crazy sense of solidarity with women from so many different countries, walks of life, and backgrounds.

And while I hate to use the word “escape” in reference to my children, let’s just say that having a little retreat time and space helps this mama recharge and love them all the more. And with Mother’s Day around the corner, three little ones running around, and baby #4 due later this month, I am thrilled to team up with Joss and Main to create a little “mom cave” space for myself.

I’ve always loved our rather sparse white master bedroom; it’s the perfect simplicity after a long day of busy-ness with kids. But I wanted to bring a bit more relaxed elegance to the space.

Make it a little more comfortable…

I started by adding a new rug (which you already saw in my spring home tour), and the thick creamy wool with light gray filagree is perfect for that neutral simplicity I was going for.

I also made another set of my diy wooden curtain rods for the room and hung my favorite affordable white curtains, softening the entire space while still allowing light to stream through those windows.

Then comes the fun stuff… This chandelier from Joss and Main is the perfect relaxed yet elegant addition to the space. Rather than hard wire it in the center of the room (since living through central Texas summers makes ceiling fans infinitely important), I simply converted it to a plug in and hung it like I did the one in my daughter’s room.

It lights our little reading corner charmingly, and the wood beads are perfect for my natural neutral space.

You may have noticed that there are two different chairs in our reading nook in the above images. I am absolutely in love with this new rocking chair also from Joss and Main. It is ultimately intended for our daughter’s nursery, but for the first 6 weeks or so while she sleeps in our room, it’s staying right here.

Speaking of sleeping, if you’re a regular reader, you may have noticed that our bed got almost a foot higher. This pregnant lady was having trouble getting in and out of our low European style bed. 😉  So my friends at Spindle Mattress (you can read all about our love of this all-natural latex mattress here) were kind enough to send me a foundation to raise our mattress. Now our bed feels comfortable, luxurious, and fresh.

Our all-white bedding is the same set we registered for when we got married 13 years ago. Some things never go out of style.

All this white needed some natural textures for balance, so in addition to the wood curtain rods and chandelier, I found these gorgeous woven turkish towels.

I also brought up my favorite teak vase and this root wood one from downstairs for some more texture.

And since you know I love fiddle leaf fig trees, I couldn’t resist this faux one. Downstairs, where we leave the shutters open most of the time, the real fig trees do great, but at this point, I decided I didn’t need the pressure of keeping one more thing alive. 😉

And we can’t forget the chair that’s going to stay in here longterm. I love its slightly mid-century lines, its textured gray blue fabric, its high back and wings to rest your head, and its overall slim profile.

I really believe that the pictures don’t do this room justice. Being rather long and skinny makes it hard to photograph. This is the farthest I can back up to show you the bed straight on (and, by the way, if you like a sweet story, you might want to read about where this bed came from).

And while the photography is far from perfect, I worked very hard to capture a shot for you that gives you a glimpse of the views out over the Texas hill country that the room affords…

Those views, the luxurious white bed, the raw wood textures, the soft white curtains, the natural greenery, the cozy reading nook, and the relaxed yet elegant feel really have come together to make this my favorite getaway space.

  10. Hi Rachel,
I’m crazy in love with the round table. Any plans to sell it?? I’d be interested if you are.

Where might I look for one of those round vases with the tiny neck? I could use one..

And the faux fig tree??? Oh my!! Where can I look for one of those too?

I have an idea… I’m a good sitter – how about I just move in?!? Just kidding. I’m here in St. Louis in the good ole midwest.

Will be thinking about you and your lovely family and that new baby!!

    Mary

    1. You are so sweet, Mary! So glad you like it. I’m afraid the round table was from my husband’s grandparents, so we’re planning to hang on to that. The fig tree is from Joss & Main, though, and you can find a link at the bottom of the post. I hope this helps! xo

  11. Your bedroom is truly a haven! I LOVE the neutral colors because it does give a relaxing look. I am really stuck on the sewing machine night table. My grandmother had one back in the ’50s and I don’t know what happened to it. I couldn’t figure out where to put one and your use is very intriguing. Get as much rest as you can enjoy.
