Quick Tips for Winter Decorating

Looking for quick tips for Winter Decorating? Don’t miss these suggestions on how to create a cozy, warm winter space in just a few minutes!

__________

I have 6 large tubs of Christmas decor.

Six.

And that doesn’t include the closet full of Christmas trees and wreaths…

For this wanna-be minimalist, that was an overwhelming realization.

So after two days of organizing, labeling, and packing away the Christmas decor, I was not ready for any more elaborate decorating. Please tell me I’m not alone?

Which brings us to today’s post. It’s the first Wednesday of the month, so it’s time for another 10 minute decorating series! Be sure to visit the other talented bloggers and designers at the end of this post for more tips. This month, though, instead of a particular project, I wanted to give you a variety of quick tips for winter decorating. I assure you that none of these tips take more than about 1.5 minutes apiece… Trust me, I don’t have the decorating attention span for that these days. 😉

1. Use lots of throw blankets.
I know it’s not profound, but throw blankets equal instant coziness. Not to mention they can help you keep your heating bill down if you actually enjoy using them. I have one draped across almost every chair or couch in the house. And if you would like some suggestions of new ones, you can see the pretty ones I rounded up here last month.

2. Let your space breathe.
It always feels a little naked when all the Christmas decor comes down, but give yourself about 10 minutes to get over the shock and you will begin to appreciate the emptiness. Don’t feel the need to replace things, just give yourself and your home a break.

3. Layer texture in unexpected places.
This faux lambswool was less than $10 at IKEA, and I love it. I originally bought it for the floor of my kids’ reading room, but it’s a sweet little touch of warmth draped across the ottoman in our living room now.

4. Bring out your winter whites.
I actually opted to use “winter whites” (i.e. creams or slightly warm whites) for Christmas this year, so there wasn’t any bringing out to do. I simply removed all the sparkly lights and garland… But if you used color for the holidays, now is a great time to reflect the beauty of winter whiteness while still keeping your space feeling warm with winter white pillows, throws, or curtains.

5. Add green to your space.
Once the trees and garland are gone, our homes are missing that natural element (even if it was faux 😉 ), and I think plants are an excellent way to bring some in. It doesn’t have to be real (though I love me some houseplants), but just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you can enjoy some life inside. In fact, depending on where you live, it might be the only place you can grow green this time of year.

6. Keep a few metallic accents.
As much as I enjoy the blank space after the busyness of the holidays, I do miss the twinkling lights… And a few metallics help to satisfy that need for me.

7. Surround yourself with books.
I actually treat this more as a life lesson than a winter decorating tip. #nerdalert 😉  But really, there’s nothing quite so cozy or inviting as books, preferably old ones with worn pages. It satisfies the desire to curl up and stay warm indoors as well as bringing more winter white to the space. 8. Set out a few candles.
There’s something so soothing about a little candle or firelight in the middle of winter. With early sunsets and cool nights, have some warm fire glow easily available!

9. Accessorize your home with extra scarves.
If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to bring a little variety to your pillows or throws, add a few scarves from your closet into the mix. This infinity scarf turned a plain winter white pillow into a unique, knitted piece of texture. A large plaid scarf makes an excellent throw or table runner, too.

10. Don’t overdo it!
Give yourself a break. If you’re like me and simply worn out from all the holiday decorating (and clean up), don’t feel pressure to do anything “special” for winter decor. Just do what you can to enjoy a simple, clean, cozy space!

And that’s it for today. I hope you found these ideas helpful! My favorite part about them is that they all translate into spring pretty well; a few little adjustments over the next couple of months and we’ll be all set for Easter.

  1. Greetings from Sourh Florida!

Visiting here from an old Migonus Home blog. Have you caught up with Jen recently? Lots of wonderful news.

My question is, what did you use to do your curtain rods? Super creative and would look good here at our house!

    RSVP!

  2. I will make you feel better now…I have 23 large bins of christmas things, also not trees or wreaths. I know. So, while I do like things spacious I must like things…Big house here tho”. Love your style.

  3. These are excellent ideas. I LOVE the way you displayed the books. I’ve seen this done previously and thought about trying it; however, it seems it would be an issue when looking for a certain one. I think it would mess with my CDO {compulsive disorder obsessive}, if you have this problem for real the letters must be in alphabetical order-lol. Thank you for sharing your fabulous ideas.

  4. Eternity scarf! Brilliant. I have a board on Pinterest called “Winter Decor” – this post nails it! Thank you.

  5. Good morning, Rachel… So, as Juanita noted, recently I’ve seen books displayed on shelves often this way… ‘backwards’. Do you have any explanation why this is being done in the decor world these days? 🙂 I’m not OCD, but I have a hard time wrapping my mind around it. Is it simply for the ‘neutral’ effect? Just for decor purposes? Also, as a fellow homeschooler, how *do* you find the book you are looking for? 😉

I love staring at the pics of your home. So light, airy and peaceful!

    1. You are so sweet, Julie. Thank you! And I have no idea why it’s being done these days… I think it may just be a nod to the textured neutrals that are so popular these days. But the ones in this bookcase for me are mostly antiques that were passed down from family, and some are worth quite a bit, so I don’t intend to get rid of them any time soon. They are not, however, regular reading material for our family, so it’s kind of a win-win for me. I probably only try to get one of these books down once a year! By them I’m sure I will have rearranged anyway. 😉

  6. Oh girl…you don’t even want to know how many boxes I have packed and put away the past two days! A couple more to go…Christmas is my jam for sure.
I am loving the blank, clean slate. Your tips are great. I do try to give myself a few weeks to let the house “breathe” before even thinking about any decor changes. And yes, after lots of red and green, I am ready for neutral again.

    1. Thanks, Lauren! I actually haven’t even started yet this year. 😬 I need to take my own advice from last year and get on it! 😉

  7. I am obsessed with your kitchen island! I’m looking for one exactly like that. Do you mind sharing where you purchased it?

    Your home is beautiful!!!
