Ever since my DIY split photo art in our half bath makeover, I’ve been wanting to create a three-piece script sign, and then I found this beautiful sign by Kelly from The Lilypad Cottage. So when Behr challenged the DIY experts to create an outdoor project for the holidays…

I knew I had just the thing: a “wishing you PEACE, JOY, and LOVE” sign from cedar.

Made from a single cedar fence picket, this sign is not only perfect to weather the outdoors, but it’s incredibly thrifty. I think my fence picket cost less than $2. With some leftover Behr paint in Ivory Keys, a few eye hooks, and some baker’s twine, I was set.

I opted to hang mine on the inside of the door this year (because I had already decorated my front porch with greenery)…

And I love the message it gives to all who leave our home.

Here’s how you can make your own:

  1. Measure 20″ from the square end of the 5′ fence picket
  2. Cut first piece and use it to measure pieces 2 and 3
  3. Design your text on the computer, print, and lay out on boards
  4. Use graphite transfer (see here for details)*
  5. After removing the paper, fill in the letters with a pencil where needed
  6. Using a fine tipped brush, paint your signs

*Note: I chose to leave my boards completely rough, making the graphite transfer a little difficult. As you can see, I chose to poke through the paper in places to give myself a better visual guide. If you choose to sand your board smooth, you shouldn’t have trouble with the graphite transfer… Totally your choice.

  1. If a weathered look is desired, create a wash (mix a little paint with water)
  2. Run the wash lightly along the edges and knots of each board and rub in with a rag
  3. Measure 3.5″ from the ends along the long edge of each board
  4. Predrill then insert an eye hook on top and bottom of boards 1 and 2, top only of board 3
  5. Using baker’s twine, create a hanger (attached to the topmost eye hooks)
  6. Connect the boards together by tying the eye hooks together with a strong knot

Isn’t it a fun alternative to a wreath?

It’s lightweight, weather resistant (if it can survive as your fence, it can survive on your front door!), and such a meaningful message for all who cross your threshold.

What do you think?

  1. Good Morning,
I have just recently found your blog and I am in awe of your talent, your creativity and your generous spirit to share the details of so much of it with all of us! So many things to love and get lost in…..I love the large rug inside your front door…would you share where you purchased it and if you are happy with how it holds up. I need a change from my black and white one…..oh hum oh hum. Thanks!

    1. Oh Megan, you are so kind! I’m so glad to have you here. 🙂 The rug was purchased at Hobby Lobby a few months ago, and I love it. The only complaint I have is that my vacuum cleaner pulled some of the ends of the natural fibers out. Honestly, the rug has so much texture that I don’t think it looks bad at all, and I have since stopped vacuuming it and instead just shake it really well. I’m not sure how many years it will last, but I think I only paid ~$30 for it (and it’s 5’x7′), so I’m pretty happy! Hope this helps.

  2. This is such a lovely project – I really love that you used fence posts and kept the natural wood as the background. It looks positively perfect on your front door.
