DIY Christmas Sign

I know Thanksgiving is tomorrow, but I can honestly say that this is one of the things I’m most thankful for…

One of my all-time favorite lines from a Christmas carol:

A thrill of hope,
The weary world rejoices.

Who doesn’t feel that weariness from time to time? Especially in the midst of the holiday flurry (oh, the irony!).

So my hope for me (and for you!) is that this holiday season would be one of celebration, rest, peace, joy, and hope. And I felt that need so strongly that I decided to put it in writing.

I followed the same process as I did when I made the fall sign for our dining room (see the full step-by-step picture tutorial here), but this time I used some of my favorite Behr paint colors: Ivory Keys (a lovely, slightly warm white) for the background and Iron Gate (the same color as my wainscoting in our half bath) for the letters.

Step 1: Paint your canvas with 2 coats of white paint.

Step 2: Design your text via computer (I used Photoshop, but Word would work, too).

Step 3: Print out your text and use a graphite transfer (i.e. color with pencil all over the back and then trace the letters with a firm pressure so that the graphite transfers to the canvas).

Step 4: Using a small artist’s brush and gray paint (and your graphite transfer as a guide), write your text.

Step 5: Using a 1×2 (stained to the color of your choice), frame your canvas and secure with wood glue and finishing nails.

I love using wall colors for art because it allows you to hang the artwork in or near those rooms and makes it all so cohesive and lovely. Plus, once I’ve found a color I love, why look elsewhere?

What Christmas carol line or holiday wish would you put on your sign?
