The Red Dresser: Take 2

Have you ever taken a personality test?

You know, the ones that tell you which kind of colored four-legged polka dot creature you think like?

To be fair, I do think they can sometimes offer helpful insight. But I find them frustrating at times because I seem to score across the board. You know, I’m both left brained and right brained. I’m both introverted and extroverted. I’m both a meat and potatoes and an exotic veggie kind of gal.

And I feel the same way in  decorating sometimes…

I love formal French. Rustic Farmhouse. Industrial. Minimal. Classic. Edgy. Boho. A little bit of everything. But while I can enjoy looking at all those styles, I’ve found over the years that I don’t necessarily want to have them all in my home. Enter: the red dresser.

This was one of the very first blog posts I shared two years ago. I love this dresser.

I love the chippy yet silky smooth to the touch finish with MMS milk paint. I love the bold red. But it doesn’t flow with most of my other things, and I’m ready for something different.

Unfortunately, I had managed to break one of the handles and since the dresser is vintage, I had to replace almost all of them before I could sell it. And in the process of replacing them, I decided to give the whole thing a little refresh.

I touched up a couple of places that had been dinged when we moved.

And I gave the entire piece a new coat of wax. “New coat” may be an exaggeration. I put a little wax on a rag and rubbed the piece down. Almost like a vigorous dusting. I probably only used one tablespoon of wax altogether… but it made a big difference.

It restored the luster of the red color.

And made the piece so beautiful…

That I was tempted to change my mind and keep it.

But I showed restraint – aren’t you proud? Plus, I already have a new one to show you that you are going to love. Stay tuned. 🙂  And if you’re near Austin and interested in this piece, feel free to email me.

In the meantime, tell me. Am I the only conflicted person when it comes to decorating?

  1. I love this dresser, red is such a happy color. Sigh…..but I understand it isn’t for everyone. On that note, I can’t wait to see the new one.

  2. I’m soooo glad that I’m not the only person that’s like that!!! It can be very frustrating at times when your trying to solidify a look. The torture…
The dresser looks awesome! I love the color red, and I always have because I’m always drawn to it. That’s probably a cue for me, but for some reason I’ve been afraid to use it? Grrr…Decisions. Decisions:)

    1. Isn’t it wonderful when you learn that you’re not alone?!?! 🙂 And I say give red a try… You’ll never know until you do.

  3. I’m not a red kind of person but i do like this piece, and when you waxed it wow what a difference.

  4. Girl, I hear ya! I love WAY too many styles and it has taken years to realize what should and shouldn’t be included in our house. Unfortunately, that means getting rid of some items we have but in the long run I know it’s best.

  5. I feel like I have decorating ADDHD. I like so many things and can’t decide or keep changing my mind when trying to decide on things. I’ve been ‘going to’ paint my large brick fireplace white for years now and I just can’t bring myself to doing it for some reason. I have the paint and have mapped it out but something keeps stopping me – so it isn’t done it is BIG and did I say BIG? I do know what I don’t like though which is a big positive! Now personally I don’t like red that much it very much depends on the shade/tone for me. I do like the bones of the dresser which is probably what you like the most as well. You could always re-paint it… SORRY! Victoria

    1. Haha… I feel the same way, Victoria! I actually love the red, and while I like the shape, even it is a little heavy for my taste. I hope someone who really loves it will come along. 🙂 Good luck with that fireplace, though! Knowing what you DON’T like is definitely one step in the right direction. 😉
