Simple Ideas to Celebrate a First Birthday

My daughter’s nursery is one of my favorite rooms in this house. It’s peaceful, serene, and elegant. She, on the other hand, is quite the firecracker – energetic, inquisitive, silly…

And absolutely positively wonderful.

With our upcoming move and all we have going on, we kept her first birthday celebration to a minimum: family, burgers, and cupcakes.

The full extent of my decorating? You’re looking at it: a repurposed window screen turned chalkboard, a few tissue paper flowers (made with two different colors of pink because I didn’t even have two sheets of the same color), and some pictures. The day before her birthday, I wrote this.

It was lovely, simple, and made a wonderful photo backdrop.

I then sent a few pictures off to Walgreens and created this for her actual big day.

It may look familiar… I did a similar one for my middle son’s first birthday (using a picture frame and chalkboard labels made from this*). You can see the details (and how far I’ve come in my photography skills 😉 ) here.

So simple, right?

I just love to see how much they’ve grown in just a year… and, of course, all the guests enjoyed comparing, too.

Right now, especially, I’m embracing the idea that simple is wonderful… and trying to relish every moment with my children before I blink and they’re grown.

  2. Happy birthday Baby Pax, she is so scrumptious. Time flys and before you know it, they’re off to college. Enjoy every moment with them while you can. I love the chalkboard picture frame, adorable. Hope your move is going well, we are in our new home amid a mountain of boxes and on my second round of Bronchitis, yuck !! But at least we’re in. ( = Take care, Diena <3

    1. Thank you so much, Diena! I’m so sorry to hear you’ve been sick, but I’m so glad you’re in the new home already! Our closing got delayed due to the flooding in Texas… Should be any day now. Have I mentioned I hate waiting? 😉 Take care of yourself!

  3. That’s adorable! She looks quite a bit like her mama:) The time does go by way to quickly…I do miss the small ones running around the house, but it’s also exciting to see how they’ve grown. And silence can be a beautiful thing! Lol!

    1. Thank you, Cindy! I certainly can’t deny being her mother, can I? Not that I would ever want to, of course! 🙂 And yes, I’m looking forward to that day of silence as much as dreading it. 😉

  4. Rachel these are very precious photos. You are right that “in a blink.” I can’t believe that my sons are nearing their 40th birthdays and we have a bunch of grandkids! It seems like yesterday my older son was telling me, “Mommy, this is good-licious!” And my younger son was telling me not to forget his “grubs.” Translation: “gloves”. In our mind’s eye they will always be our babies and that is something no one can take away. Excuse me while I wipe away a tear.

    1. Oh dear, Maryjean, you’ve got me tearing up, too! I keep telling myself it goes fast and I need to slow down to take it all in… Thank you for the sweet stories and encouragement!
