Now that those public service announcements are over, on to the task at hand: the butler’s pantry makeover.

Some of you are probably asking what a butler’s pantry even is. If my home weren’t build 75 years ago, I’m not sure I would know either. It’s a fairly loose term given to a space with storage (similar to kitchen cabinets) that are separate from the main kitchen – usually between kitchen and dining room. You know, a place to store glassware and silver and for the butler to wait and serve from… because we all have butlers, right? 😉

Anyway, that’s exactly where mine is – between the dining room and kitchen. A swinging door takes you in, and it allows people from the dining room to see your pretty dishes without staring at the dirty ones in your sink. Not that we ever have dirty dishes in our sink, right ladies?

Now let’s remember how this room started.

Since we often use it as a drink and/or dessert bar, I wanted to maintain a waterproof counter top, so we carried the new granite from the kitchen (all sources at bottom of post) into the butler’s pantry. The biggest change was new door fronts and hardware.

To simplify, we replaced all those double doors (which were a little busy for my taste) with singles. We used simple shaker doors and divided glass front ones for the top. With new hardware and fresh paint, this space feels 75 years newer but still just as classy.

Oh, and no lady room is complete without jewelry, right? This little crystal pendant gave it the perfect sparkle.

  1. I’ve never had one, but if I did, I’d want my butler’s pantry to look like yours. You did an awesome job of updating it while preserving the integrity of the period and function. Cheers, Ardith

  3. Not too many people come to mind that I know have butler pantries in their home, however I can see where this might come in handy. Cabinet and counter space how wonderful. I like the doors you made a good choice. Very nice job with the make over, I like your color choices.

  4. Beautiful butler’s pantry! If you don’t mind my asking, where did you get your two-tiered tray? I’ve been looking for a rectangular one for quite a while for our own tea station. Again, lovely job!

    1. Thank you, Cynthia! I don’t mind at all. It came from Crate and Barrel, but it was a wedding present (which means it is almost 11 years old)… not sure if they still carry it. 🙂

  5. THANK YOU, RACHEL! THEY STILL HAVE IT! YEAH! Cambridge 2-Tier Serving Tray — online and ready to ship — but don’t add it to your post until I order mine! haha THANKS, again!

  6. As always, so “Classy” Rachel. What a shame you have to leave that gorgeous space. ) = I also love your paint choice, the Colonade Grey, it’s the perfect mix of grey and taupe. Love it and will use that same color palette as we embark on our new journey “too”. We found a beautiful Cape Cod style home built in 1928. I’m so excited for you, your family and for my husband and myself. Seems there will be alot of packing going on in the next few weeks (not really looking forward to that ! ) Anyway, in case i don’t write to you for a while, i’ll be back. Just wish i was your age to go through this process (again! but this is the last time ( = ! )Here’s to a smooth transition for both of us. Take care. Sincerely, Diena

    1. Oh Diena, I’m so glad to hear you found a wonderful new home!! I wish you all the best in your packing and moving… I’m sure the new house will be just lovely. And thank you so much for your kind words! Here’s to new adventures. 😉

  7. I followed your kitchen link from thrifty decor chick and am interested in your new door selection process and source…? I’ve had a similar project in mind – new cabinet doors while painting my cabinets. Your kitchen looks terrific!

    1. Thank you so much, Sarah! I’m so glad you like it. I wrote about refacing our cabinets here. I used a local contractor (we were rather pressed for time with our upcoming move!), and I had them made in paint grade shaker style (I love the classic look of shaker doors). I hope this helps!
