DIY Framed Chalkboard
We interrupt this regularly scheduled program to make an important announcement: I am now a grown up. You only thought I was grown up before now – what with my house, my kids, and all my power tools… But the truth is, this little lady turned 30 yesterday. THIR-TY. Oh boy.
So now, we continue your regularly scheduled DIY project with a new and improved, grown up author. 😉 And this grown up has a fabulous DIY framed chalkboard for you today. It’s versatile, classy, and full of character. With beautiful, natural, aged patina plus a little chalkboard surface to change with the seasons, this window screen turned chalkboard is a great addition to any room!
When we had the exterior of our house painted a couple of years ago, the painter found one of the old window screens that had not been removed like the rest. Since our windows have been painted shut for years, window screens are rather unnecessary. I thought it was the perfect size for a blank wall in my dining room.
So I found an old piece of backer board (I think it was formerly in a picture frame) and painted it with chalkboard paint. I cut out any remaining screen, cleaned the frame thoroughly, screwed the new chalkboard into the back, and added a little dark walnut stain on some of the distressed places on the frame to give it more contrast. Done and done.
It’s now hanging in my dining room, and I love how the rustic quality contrasts my French dining furniture…
But compliments the weathered wood box I made for my centerpiece.
I also love how it can be changed out for the seasons or hold our menu for a party… I even layer signs and buntings over it at times (like for the 4th of July here).
It’s the perfect, versatile piece of art!
What do you think? Have you turned any “found” objects into chalkboards?

Awwww… thanks! You’re the sweetest. 🙂 xoxo
This looks amazing Rachel- we have about 78 old window frames taking up half of our shed right now…I should really do this with one (of course I have to get the glass out first and that is such a nightmare of a job!!
Ugh. That is a nightmare job. But I wish I was your next door neighbor because I’d take at least 20 of those off your hands! Ha!
Hope your birthday was great! I haven’t delved into any chalkboard crafts yet. However, after seeing yours I’m very tempted.
Thank you so much, Sandra! I’m so glad you like it. 🙂
