10 Affordable Ways to Decorate for Fall (+ FREE Printable)

10 tips for affordable fall decorating: creative, budget friendly ideas!

I’m a bit of an efficiency freak. So when I am decorating for holidays, I want it to be quick and affordable because – really – it only stays up for a few months at most, right?

That said, I do still enjoy decorating a bit for seasons… Especially as my children are young, it is so fun to have the seasonal reminders and talk about the beauty of nature and the joy of celebrations. So here are my quick and cost-effective tips for seasonal fall decorating:

Cut branches.  Lots of them – they’re free. 😉

Make a wreath from faux greenery. My DIY eucalyptus wreath was so much less expensive than a real one, and I can use it year after year. Even better, eucalyptus is so versatile that this wreath looks holiday-esque when planted by pumpkins or pinecones and spring-y when paired with flowers.

Use layers and texture.  I love texture year round, but there’s something about the coziness of the autumn season that is just asking for it. Use your regular decor: baskets, throw pillows, vases, etc. and group or layer them in such a way to highlight that texture. Same year-round decorative items but instant fall feel!

Display your fruit.  I actually love to do this year round as I think it’s beautiful and it encourages my kids to grab this rather than other snacks… but especially for fall, there’s something about the “harvest” season that is so well complemented by fresh produce.

Use scarves.  If you do what I do (and what many people do), you surround yourself in your home with some of the same colors you wear (for more on that topic, see my  choosing paint color series)… So grab some scarves from your closet and add instant coziness to your home! When you’re ready to wear one, just grab it from the living room or dining room table.

Make envelope pillow covers.  For $6 at Hobby Lobby, I got this adorable arrow fabric. I just made a couple of covers for inserts I already had (see my friend Krista’s fabulous tutorial if you’ve never made envelope covers – they’re super simple). For another super affordable fall pillow cover, see my antler pillow from last year.

Make your own throw blankets.  My kids helped me pick this fleece out at the fabric store the other day. It was on clearance, so for about $10, we got a big, cozy throw. I didn’t even hem it!

Purchase pumpkins sparingly.  This may sound a little silly, but I would buy every pumpkin I saw if I could, especially white and gray green ones… But a couple of well placed ones is plenty. I only spent $10 this year at my local grocery store, and the house feels all fall-ed up.

Raid your garage. This little fall sign was some chunks of scrap wood and paint samples.

Frame a printable.  My diy painted sign was so popular (and I love it!), that I thought I’d offer a printable version for those who don’t feel ready to tackle the framed canvas. I have a chalkboard version and a white and gray one; they are both 8×10. Just print one out on regular printer paper and trim to fit your 8×10 frame. They’re free!

  3. Be still and know that I am GOD! This is exactly what we did this past week with all the storms in our little town of Flagler Beach! We evacuated to our home in Louisville,Kentucky. Our son and grandson made the trip from Florida also to be with us. We enjoyed family for a few days. We were still and prayerfully concerned but knew that God was I never control! I enjoyed so much reading every single post and tried to keep the tv news off. I really love all your decorating tips! Thanks for allowing me to visit your beautiful home through the photos.
