Classy yet Affordable White Curtains

Coming off of Mother’s Day, I feel convicted that life is not about stuff.  It’s not about a fancy home or the “best deal.”  It’s not about pretty things or looking good.

It’s about the relationships in your life.  The joys and challenges… and your response to them all.

On the flip side, though, creating a beautiful, peaceful, joy-filled home can help support those things that matter.  It can create a space where people want to be.  A space where you can find quiet, calm, peace, and hope.  A space for goodness and growth.

With that in mind, I’m excited to share this little diy addition to my living room: affordable wooden curtain rods and elegant white curtains.

You can see the space before here.  While I have been trying to embrace simplicity and not over-fill our home, this space was feeling a little too cold for my taste.  And the echo up the stairs is pretty significant, so I am hoping by adding some fabric touches throughout the home we can cut that back.

I will be sharing the tutorial for the curtain rods soon, but I think two things sums it up: super affordable and Restoration Hardware look.  Win win, right? :)

And the curtains?  Ikea.  Seriously.  I am a fan of Ikea, and I was still amazed by how beautiful they look.  They are the Ritva curtains in white.  I purchased the 57″x118″ for our room (where the ceilings are 108″ high).  If there’s no Ikea near you, you can actually order them from Amazon here, but right now I think they only carry the 98″ ones.  I had originally planned to hem them, but I’m kind of loving the overly dramatic pooling on the floor.

The fabric has a linen look (with some cross patterns in the fabric when you look closely), and they are just the right weight: sturdy and solid but allowing light to pass through.

We hung them with curtain clips like these because I liked how they fell into folds and how easy they are to adjust, but there is an option of running the pole directly through loops on the back of the curtain top, as well.

A word of caution: they are not a bright white.  I wouldn’t really call them an off-white either (and definitely not cream), but you can see how they compare to the various whites I have in my space: the striped pillow and throw on the gray chair are bright whites, the trim is technically “extra white” straight off the shelf, but it’s not quite as bright as the striped things, and the ottoman is definitely an oatmeal linen.  I actually love how it melds my various whites together, but be forewarned if you have a room with only bright white.

So after this past weekend – when we had a joint birthday party for all three kids and celebrated my gift of being their mommy – I feel like I need to share my “super awesome cheap curtains” with these thoughts.  Do we love super awesome cheap?  Yep.  Do we celebrate beautiful and classy?  Definitely.  Is it the end goal?  Nope.  Not even close.

And do we love when our husband and kids give us this super awesome Mother’s Day gift?  Absolutely.  But do we love just as much the handmade cards with misspelled words?  Without a doubt.

So let me encourage you to enjoy the hunt for affordable and beautiful home decor – like these super fun curtains – but not to be trapped by the idea that it is the ultimate goal.  Use it as a tool to create a home you love and where you can love your loved ones.

And pin this if you think it might help you do just that. 😉

  1. Hi Rachel, Love the RITVA curtains. I have them as well and they do puddle on the floor. I tied them back with some rope. Here is a link if you want to see:

Your wooden rod is amazing!!!! Christine from Little Brags

  2. Rachel they really make a difference in the room, adding softness. Although I must admit I thought the room was perfect before! I too have Ikea curtains and love them so much; a reasonable price for a natural fiber! And it goes without saying that the stuff is not important but it certainly helps mom to be calmer and be a better mom when she has pretty in the home. I host a new link party Sweet Inspiration and would be honored to have you link up with us. It runs Friday thru Tuesday.
