Dessert and Coffee and a Sweet Spring Tablescape

Soft, feminine, and a little flashy with the touches of copper: A spring dessert table

I get carried away sometimes… You know, like when you intend to read only one more chapter and then glance at the clock and realize it’s 4am and you’ve finished the book? Or when you sit down to eat a piece of chocolate and realize 20 minutes later that the whole bag is gone. Or you run into Target just to get laundry detergent and come out with an entire new spring wardrobe.

Wait… please tell me I’m not the only one?!

Well, friends, you are now to be the beneficiaries of one of my “carried away” moments.

I made these amazing lemon tarts the other day, fully intending to stage a little dessert and coffee scene for you all. This is the final parts of our French series: night (see part 1: morning and part 2: noon if you like), and my memories of leisurely conversation over espresso and dessert is one of my fondest memories of our time living in France. After dinner with friends, we would savor pastries and camaraderie until all hours of the night.

Naturally, I had to stage at least one of our French series in my dining room, since my great grandmother’s dining set marks it as my most traditionally French space.

The morning I intended to photograph the scene, I found these gorgeous blush hydrangeas at my local grocery store, and my four year old helped them jump into our basket.

And that was all she wrote…

My simple coffee and desert scene evolved into a full blown fancy table setting.

I actually think it would be kind of perfect for a Mother’s Day brunch, don’t you? Soft, feminine, and a little flashy with the touches of copper.

Or what about Easter dinner?

The gold china belonged to my grandmother, and I love using it as an accent.

Pairing it with clean, simple white dishes gives it a bit more modern look.

While I do believe in having my young children eat off of breakable plates sometimes and I have made it one of our family habits to use our dining room often, this is a bit fancy even for me.

But what’s the fun if you can’t indulge from time to time?

And besides, there’s nothing more French than luxuriating around good people and good food, right?
