Our Master Bedroom

I’m not going to lie. If there was one room we’ve simply neglected since we bought our 1940 colonial three years ago, it would probably be the master bedroom.

Ok, maybe that’s not fair to myself. I’ve painted it (remember when I shared all the plans almost two years ago?), made gorgeous “reclaimed” wood curtain rods (for just $5!), added an adorable tufted bench*, and refinished a dresser as a gift to my husband. So maybe I should give myself a little more credit…

But it is still fairly sparse. The red dresser is the only pop of color.

Which is ok with me because I love neutrals. The white bedding was a wedding gift (11 years ago from PB; you can find similar bedding – which happens to be on sale now! – here).

The gray mirror peeking out on the left of this picture was a Hobby Lobby clearance item that I refinished (full tutorial here). And the artwork are some of my images from my time living in France (several of which are available as instant digital downloads in my Etsy shop if you’re interested).

The tufted ottoman with nailhead details* was my most recent addition (and it’s wonderful, by the way – hidden storage and all!). And I love our little window that I painted with gray chalk paint.

But the bedroom suit is my favorite part.

I do love the four poster bed – simple and modern yet classic and elegant.

But overall, I don’t love it because it’s particularly expensive or fancy. And I don’t love it because it’s exactly “my style.” In fact, I will probably someday replace the matching pieces with something a little more eclectic…

No, I love it because my husband surprised me with it when we bought our first house.

Yep, I walked into our home the day after we closed. There weren’t even any of our boxes there yet… and this full bedroom set was there – fully assembled. I thought that was one of the most romantic gestures ever.

Now, almost 11 years (and three kids – see that nursery through the open door?) later, I still love him.

And I still swoon for furniture. 😉

  1. Aww what a sweet hubby you have! Sounds like he definitely knows the way to your heart. That bed is gorgeous!

  2. What a beautiful story, Rachel, and indeed a lovely, loving gesture from your husband. Cheers, Ardith

  3. It’s a beautiful room Rachel, but I understand your desire for more personality. Maybe a colorful throw and some eclectic pillows will give you that look you’re after while still keeping your hubby happy….unless he’s not a pillow guy (like Mr DIY).

    1. Haha… I am pleased to say that Mr Pax doesn’t care too much how many pillows I add to a room. I think this room just seemed a lower priority than all the parts of the house that visitors saw… But when we get to our new home this summer I am determined not to let it be the last one on the list. 😉 And yes, throw pillows and throws are always a wonderful and easy addition!!

  4. I LOVE your master bedroom! Love the bedroom furniture! And, where did you find that fabulous overhead fan with the cool lights??? I also love your office space:)

    1. You are so kind, Maggie! The fan came from Lowe’s – pretty spiffy, isn’t it? 🙂 So glad you like it all!

  5. We all understand wanting to have some new furniture. Your husband was so sweet surprising you with that set! If you are attached to the memories of the bedroom set, maybe in the future when the kids are big enough (and the room too!) maybe you can move that bed set to the kids or guest bedroom and you could get a new one. That way you haven’t “thrown away” the memories from the old bed set!

    1. Wasn’t he so kind?! I totally agree – I will have to keep the set somewhere… it’s too special to get rid of. 🙂

  6. The bed is indeed gorgeous, you are blessed with a wonderfully thoughtful husband.I too have white set on my bed and i love it not giving it up. I chose a color to accent my room with and bought 3 pillows, one for my bed and 2 for my antiq. basket close to my bed it really helps and is very noticable.Just a suggestion since i know you will be moving soon.

    1. I am, aren’t I?! And I agree – the room still needs something… We’ll see what the new space tells me when I get there. Colorful throw pillows are always a great solution! 🙂
