Classy (and affordable!) DIY Stocking Hanger

I have a confession. Last year for the last 10 years, I have simply hung my stockings via painters tape. True story.

Could we ever put presents in them? No.

Did it require some seriously creative mantel decorations to hide the bright blue tape? Yes.

But painter’s tape no more…

This year, I was determined to hang my stockings the right way. With gorgeous, coordinated stocking hooks. Or at least five simple, plain ones.

Yes. FIVE. Do you know how pricey that was getting? Even with the fairly cheap stocking holders? And how could I spend a fortune on stocking holders when I made my stockings for ~$20 from thrift store sweaters?

So I came up with  another plan. Last year, I made for our master these gorgeous curtain rods with a reclaimed wood look for $5 each. Yep. $5. See the full tutorial here.

I actually used the wood on our gray living room wingbacks as inspiration for the curtain rods, so they seemed the perfect choice for this project. I simply bought two fairly heavy, wrought iron stocking hooks and used picture hanging wire to connect the curtain rod to the stocking hooks.

Now, all five stockings hang beautifully… and I love the look of the wooden curtain rod contrasting the white mantel. Not bad for an affordable solution, eh?

    1. Thanks, Diana! I did that sign a few years ago (before I was blogging)… it’s one of my favorites, too! 🙂

  1. Hi There —

Just saw this on Pinterest. Did you attach the curtain road directly to your mantle? I couldn’t see the bracket holding the rod?

    Thanks so much.

    1. Hi Nancy,
I attached the curtain rod to the two stocking holders at either end of the mantel. Rather than a holder for each stocking, I just used the two to hold the curtain rod. I hope this helps!

  2. What a great idea! I may have to try it this year. I also love your chairs- would you mind telling me where you got them? I’ve been searching and these are just what I was looking for!

  3. Hi, loved the curtain rod Christmas stocking display. May I ask where you purchased the actual stocking hooks? Thanks!
