How to Mix Decorating Styles

I went to kindergarten.

Really, I did.

I even know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide…  sometimes.

When Kenroy Home offered me this gorgeous bronze mirror and rustic galvanized table lamp, my heart fluttered.

Seriously.

You know I love white, chippy planks and sparkling crystal, whitewashed wood and the perfect gold finish.  In short, I love contrasts.

I love industrial finishes paired with red velvet traditional.  I love mixing styles.

And the Cudahy table lamp (which reminds me of an old milk can) looked like it would be perfect in my newly renovated attic, while the rich, bronze finish and grand, traditional arch of the Cathedral mirror would provide that juxtaposition I crave so much.

They arrived; I carried them into my attic; the combination was lovely…

and way too tall for my roofline up there.

The only wall where they fit in my attic is also the only wall where the bed fits.  But I had to show you just how perfect they were… So I moved the bed – rearranged the entire room, really – and photographed it just for you.

Feel special.  Feel very special.

And now that you believe me that my brilliant idea really was brilliant (minus the whole not knowing how to count to 38 – the height of the mirror)… I can show you where the pieces actually ended up in my home.  The lamp is in my entryway – you may recognize this from my fall home tour.

And the mirror (which, yes, I already painted because I had too many other dark things in the dining room… I have a need for contrast and juxtaposition, remember? 😉 ) is now sporting my DIY eucalyptus wreath and has become my new absolutely favorite piece.  Truly.

Don’t you just love them?  If so, be sure to come back next week because I have a big surprise for you… 😉

In the meantime, I’d love to know: do you mix decorating styles?  And how do you do it?

Disclosure: The lamp and mirror were provided by Kenroy Homes, but opinions, text, and stellar math skills are, as always, 100% (or is it 110%?) mine.

  2. What I’d like to know is where you got the pendant light hanging in the attic bedroom. I need some of these! Can you help me? Also, the mirror painted is better. Lovely!

  3. LOVE that lamp and mirror together – great mix!

  4. You have such a knack for mixing styles – everything just works so well! Also, I love that you ended up painting the mirror because it looks SO GOOD in white!!

  5. Beautiful contrasts Rachel – hahaha how frustrating, but it turned out well in the end, right?

Thanks, Krista! Definitely one of those times when I just have to laugh at myself… those seem to happen a lot! 😉

  6. I am so with you on mixing styles, especially since I usually find myself torn between choosing a favorite. It’s always so confusing. (Thanks a lot, Pinterest!) I totally agree that balancing the lights/darks to create contrast is amazing. And juxtaposition adds interest anyway. That’s what I tell myself when I have a hard time deciding my direction anyway. I’m so loving that lamp!!! And I think the mirror looks even better in white. (P.S. So glad I’m not the only one with bad math skills. English teachers aren’t meant for numbers anyway, right? That’s my excuse. Haha)

  7. You always have a knack for putting things together soooo well! I have a Kenroy mirror and love it.
    Hugs, Jamie
