Paintin’ Punkins

Happy Friday!  It’s been a week full of makeovers: the antique spool chest and my little mint stool… and today is no different.  But, as it’s Friday, I thought it would be fun to do a quick and easy little fall makeover: how to paint pumpkins.

But not just any pumpkins.  Plastic pumpkins.

You know, the kind that won’t rot?  And you can use them again next year?  This cheap frugal gal from the scorching lands of Texas (where we’re still having days in the 90’s) loves a real pumpkin or two, but I know the value of reusable and non-perishable. 😉

I first shared this tutorial on the Country Chic Paint blog a couple of weeks ago.  It’s so so simple, and the finished product has just the right waxy sheen of a real heirloom pumpkin.

Start with any color of Country Chic Paint; I used lazy linen, vanilla frosting, elegance, and refreshed.  The elegance and refreshed were a little too bold for my liking (on this project, at least), so I mixed each with a touch of vanilla frosting to tone them down some.  Use a second coat, if needed (depending on what color the pumpkin starts).  Once dry, give them a  full coat of clear wax and another of dark.

It’s perfect because the Country Chic Paint adheres beautifully, even to plastic.  But the paint alone looks too regular, lacking the variations of a real pumpkin.

With the addition of the dark wax, which I just put on randomly…

And then rubbed in until I liked the overall effect…

I think the final product is stunning.  I’m still contemplating how to make the stems look more real, but in the meantime, they are bearing my house numbers proudly

And I love them!

  1. Hi Rachel, so glad to see a tutorial on painting pumpkins. Every year I keep telling myself I’m going to decorate for fall with white pumpkins. And every year they are either picked over so badly or the prices are sky high. I decided to paint plastic ones but was a nervous wreck for some reason, now i shall paint my heart out thanks to you. You’ve done it again ( : Happy Friday, Sincerely, Diena <3
