Big Island Kitchens

Do you ever get so caught up in things that your mind just whirls in circles until you are literally nauseated?  Like you’ve spent hours on a tilt-a-wheel?  I’m a bit ashamed to say that my obsessive compulsive brain tends toward that fairly often…

So in an attempt to get the madness out of my head and onto some paper my computer, I thought I’d share with you some of these amazingly gorgeous kitchens I’ve been scouring lately (just click the photos for the original source).

And yes, that does mean that a kitchen reno might be in our somewhat near future.

That said, we still have an 8-week-old baby, a not-quite-finished new attic, and a only-half-done laundry room…  So maybe somewhat near is a fairly liberal term.

Whenever it does happen, though, I have big plans to tear down the wall between our kitchen and dining room.  That, however, is the main wall of the current kitchen (with our oven, stove, and the majority of our cabinetry and counter space).  So to counteract that, we’ll need an enormous island.  I couldn’t be more excited.

I love how a big kitchen island allows a gathering place.  A “home base,” if you will, for cooking, eating, sharing, crafting, playing…

I love to cook eat, so I spend a lot of time in the kitchen, and I’m excited to make it a place where my loved ones can gather and join me.

Naturally, I have a few other things on my wish list, like amazing lighting.

Maybe even amazing lighting combined with a pot rack (so creative, right?!?!).

And crisp white, tailored cabinets are definitely the direction I want to go.

But, most importantly, an enormous, glorious island.

What do you think?  Do you love big island kitchens as much as I do?

  1. I would so love a humongous kitchen island! I will be excited to watch your kitchen reno, they are the best! So many wonderful & exciting choices to make in that space! Right now I have a vintage piece in my kitchen for an island. And I do mean vintage! It has red & white check contact paper-lined drawers, built in wood spacers for the utensils and other different shapes for who-knows-what to store places. The drawer fronts have such chippy goodness I can’t bare to paint them. I did have the sides wrapped in beadboard, they were just too yucky! Congrats on your new baby! Nothing better I say! Love your blog, keep it up!

P.S. I did finally score that gorgeous gray clock I asked you about from Antique Farnhouse and I love it! Thanks!

I’m so glad you found the clock, Cathy! And your island sound fabulous. We had a funny little dresser/cabinet as an island for a while (but yours sounds so much better!). Thank you so much for your sweet comment!! xoxo

  2. We were fortunate enough to find an open floor plan when we bought our house almost a year ago. One of the biggest selling points for me was the large kitchen island. I envisioned Christmas baking and all other holidays and having enough space to work in. It’s a dream come true for me. My grandkids love it!

    • Rachel Paxton says:

That is so heartwarming, Vickie! I hope we enjoy the same special memories in our new kitchen. :)

  3. Oooooh! So many pretty kitchens….I obsess over pretty kitchens and how ugly mine is all the time..So I totally get what you’re saying! 😉

  4. It’s kitchens like these that make me wish I had an island. So beautiful!

  5. When we built our farmhouse almost 2 years ago, my #1 priority was a Big Island Kitchen. I totally get it! All of those pictures are gorgeous. It’s so fun to plan and dream! Here’s a lil link to my kitchen.

How wonderful, Gretchen! You have an amazing kitchen; I especially love the bead board around the island. Thank you for sharing!!

  6. Love every single one of these! We are planning a kitchen renovation and currently have a peninsula so I am just dying to get an island! I cannot wait to have a new layout. Thanks for sharing!
