A Springtime Barbeque Baby Shower

Springtime. New life. Cute, fuzzy baby chicks. Sunshine, warmth, and rebirth. Or something like that… 😉

I recently hosted a baby shower for my niece who is due in early June. Though I’ve always steered clear of “couples” showers (just a personal preference, no judgment here), the circumstances called for it this time. And the #1 thing I believe about hosting a shower is making the honoree(s) feel honored. Right? So a barbeque baby shower it became!

Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate entirely (alas, so much for the “sunshine” and “warmth” of spring!), so we had a last-minute condensing of the outdoor seating to the long, narrow porch. Not ideal, but it worked. And since I was formally instructed that too much frill would scare the men away, I kept it VERY simple: white plastic tablecloths and painted mason jars (see the tutorial here for the jars). We served up burgers and such outside and set a pretty spread for the women inside.

You can never go wrong with a simple but impressive fruit display.

And the petite chocolate cupcakes with baby pink cream cheese frosting were a big hit.

Since the parents don’t have a “themed” nursery plan in the traditional sense, and since we actually wanted the aforementioned men to stay for the party, we tried to keep the cheesy/cute/babyish stuff to a minimum. I even mixed in blueish jars (which happen to match the light aqua of the bedding they chose) to boost the testosterone of the room ever so slightly.

The diaper cake (tutorial here) was admittedly very feminine, but I love how it commanded a presence on a very full table.

But the centerpiece of the room, if you will, was the distressed gray crib (tutorial here) which was a surprise for the mother-to-be.

We couldn’t resist using it to pile the presents for the little one.

So despite the weather, I think my first couples shower was a success: the parents were blessed with some amazing gifts; the rain held off enough to grill the burgers; everyone went home full, and this eight-month pregnant momma didn’t die in the process. 😉

I’d call that a success!
