I forget friends’ birthdays.  I forget who gave me gifts and tend to purge and get rid of things often.  I don’t keep birthday cards.  But I want a place for my children to cherish things.

Years ago, my husband and I bought a mini artificial tree, and it now provides the perfect place for our “sentimental” ornaments.  You know, the ones that may not satisfy your taste, but certainly satisfy your heart.

Like Oscar the Grouch or the first toy soldier that my husband had as a little boy…

Or the lovely ornament that my son made at school this year, complete with his red-paint-on-the-face and it’s-freakin’-freezing-out-here expression.

My obsessive compulsive tendencies may not want these things to share space with my book page ornaments or sheet music Christmas trees or vintage marquee letters downstairs, but this little spot in our second floor landing is the perfect place.

The boys think of it as their special tree, and they love that it sits just outside their bedroom.

They love that it’s small like them, that we can snuggle on the chaise next to it while they tell me why each ornament is special.  They love that we make things that are special to them special.

How about you?  In what ways do you celebrate the sentimental side of Christmas?
