Distressed and Paned… Mirror Makeover
I’ve been having fun helping my parents decorate their new home, and my most recent project was to makeover a very outdated mirror.
Do you get it?!?! 😉
My parents have a significant amount of natural wood furniture, so we decided that a fun color would balance the heavier, carved furniture. We had seen some gorgeous, old window-like mirrors, and the curved top of an old mirror they had reminded us of those, so we set off to give it the paned-window look.
It was easy – one afternoon worth of work and a lot of fun (does that make me weird?!?!). You could also do this with a square or rectangular mirror, but I think the curved top gives it the perfect flavor.

Here are the necessary supplies:
- mirror
- unfinished molding strips the same depth (or thinner) than your mirror frame
- stain to match mirror’s finish
- hand saw or chop saw
- gorilla glue
- wood filler
- chalk paint (I recommend Amy Howard One Step Paint)
- sandpaper
- clear and dark wax
Love this. Where did you find a curved mirror? I agree it really makes the mirror.
Thanks, Kim! The mirror was one that belonged to my great grandparents years ago… My parents have had it since the 70’s, at least. Sorry I don’t have a lead for you!
This mirror is wonderful! And you did a great job!
Thank you so much, Monica! I’m so glad you like it. 🙂
I like this project Rachel and the color; wish there was some place to purchase the curved mirror.
This looks so beautiful I made one recently but with a twist you can check it out on my blog . I made it golden in color here’s the link

I love the color. Can you tell me what shade you used please?
So glad you like it, Karen! I’m pretty sure it was a sample of Gulf Winds by Behr… but I also have Gray Morning (also Behr) that looks pretty close… Apparently I need to write these things down! 🙂
Fantastic. If I ever find a rounder top mirror, I will know just what I want to do with it. Your really accomplished making it look original and old. Thanks for the tutorial.

Thank you so much, Audrey! I’m so glad you like the mirror!!
Very worthwhile! I would never have guessed that is wasn’t paned to begin with, and such a great colour!
LOVE this idea of adding the panes! I like the look but have only seen expensive new mirrors like this. Will now keep my eyes open for an inexpensive older mirror and add panes!
Wonderful! I hope you find one you like soon. 🙂
Awesome tutorial, Rachel! I live in a VERY remote community which has zero chances of finding well loved pieces, so making them is the perfect solution! I can’t wait to give this a try – thanks!
So glad you like it, Chris! Hope you enjoy it!! 🙂
